One of my sensi- tivities was to tobacco smoke and if I suffered from "mis- placed, anger", it was probably. because it-was no fun having a breathing prob- lem and having to pay to go to an allergist to get antihis- tamine shots and medication to control my wheezing and coughing. It was necessitated having to more from an up- per flat where the men downstairs smoked. All four brothers and three of my sisters smoked. Had they not, some of them might still be alive. I sent cigarettes to my brothers when they were overseas and to our pris- oner of war. That was before my allergy problems. One of my brothers eventually did stop smoking after he was diagnosed with cancer and had surgery. Two others stopped after health problems -- heart and emphysema. _ I fail to understand if smok- ing was banned in all public places, why there would not be a level playing field. Do you know the first two questions a pediatrician asks Last chance before Christine | Bare anon. parents who are asking for his help for a child with respira- tory problems? No. | -- Anybody in the house smoke? And No. 2 any pets? I know a family who gave up their dog when their child was diagnosed with asthma. I know another father who continued to smoke when one of his children was diagnosed with multiple sensitivities. I was once asked to move up in a company where I worked but I hesitated be- came my prospective boss smoked cigars so told him my predicament. He said he didn't smoke much inside and it shouldn't be a problem. As an 'anti- smoking zealot', yes, I didn't enjoy sitting in a restaurant while people across the divider con- taminated the air I had to breathe. Why do you think "stop smoking" is near the top of the list for things to do for a healthy lifestyle? Please don't tell me smok- ing doesn't affect every phase of our lives -- and as for dog doodoo, that aggravates some asthmatics as well and I resent having to share the sidewalk with dogs, especially when taxpayers have provided a place for them to rum. - As for "nails in coffins", if smoking is banned, we might save a lot of nails and delay the coffins, to say nothing of health costs. Inez Brennan Agrees with letter from Eileen Hutcheson To the editor; Re the December 11/03 issue: I cannot agree more with the letter written by Eileen Hutchison. It gives one pause for thought. It could not have been said any bet- ter, and I commend her astuteness in her com- For those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, Christmas can be one of the most difficult times of the year. It is good to read an intelli- gent letter. Also, a comment about Mike O'Leary's column on the absurdity of the use of "festive" instead of Christmas. I wholeheart- edly agree. I, too, intend to boycott any establishments that use "festive" to de- scribe the most traditional of holidays in this ridicu- lous fashion so as to not offend anyone. Not only is this use of "festive" totally offensive but also ridicu- lous!! Another item that I found offensive was learn- ing that our illustrious former mayor Gastle had the nerve to spend $10,000 of taxpayers money for a new chain of office. Good riddance to Gastle. May we have a more conscien- tious mayor this time around who thinks twice before spending exorbitant and excessive amounts of money on trivial things. Thank you letting me for have my say. Merry Christmas to all at the New Tanner. Nadia Noack Make sure the base of your Christmas tree is immersed in water at all times,
