Swirls of cigarette smoke enveloped Acton Legion president George O' Donnell as he and other Legion members lit up outside the Civic Centre on Tuesday, after Town Council refused to consider exempting the Acton and Georgetown Legions from the municipal smoking bylaw. "Last time we were here, we asked Council for an exemption and they said ILLAGE Rent-A-Car From Per Hour 856-0000 387 Queen St. East, Acton 286 Alma Street, Rockwood they would go and look at the issue, because Brampton is exempt, Milton is exempt, Erin is exempt -- everybody but Halton Hills, but now they aren't going to do anything," Acton Legion president O'Donnell said. While unhappy with Council's refusal to consider the exemption, O' Donnell said the Acton Legion would abide by the smoking bylaw, and discuss the issue again at the next Legion general meeting. O'Donnell said in the first six weeks after tougher smoking rules were implemented last summer, banning smoking until after 9 p.m., revenue at the Acton Legion decreased 28 per cent. "We don't get half the business now during the day that we used to get," he said. Council also heard from Wade Bond, president of the Royal Canadian Legion in Georgetown, who said a survey of surrounding Legions found most have exemptions to smoking bylaws, some with provisions for separately ventilated continued on page 2 CBT EULY Pa 336 Guelph St. Georgetown 905-877-0149 OE CLR Federal Liberals elect executive for new riding of © Wellington/Halton Hills in -- _ Rockmosa hall.
