Major PeeWee Tanners Scott Weber showed huge game-long commitment despite an 11-1 trouncing versus Hespeler -- but found no joy on this occasion. - Chuck Tysoe photo Novice Tanners take 3-1 lead in final with Fergus The Carquest Acton Nellis Construction Novice BB Tanners beat Fergus twice this week to take a 3- 1 lead in their OMHA final, needing one more win to take the championship. The Tanners beat the Highlanders 4-3 on March 16, outshooting Fergus 17- 8. Fergus took a 2-0 lead into the second period, but the Tanners struck back for . three goals in 22 seconds to take the lead. Mason Galway started the scoring on a close-in feed from Walter Kirkness, then Michael Evans raced in from the centre ice face-off to score unassisted 12 sec- onds later. Evans then took the resulting face-off in again, this time passing to Billy Mowat for the goal. Fergus tied it late in the sec- ond, but the Tanners scored the winner with less than four minutes left in the third. Callum Bowles scored the goal, assisted by Damian Ewing and T.J. Baker. The teams met again two days later in Fergus, and again Acton won by a goal, this time by 2-1. Mason Overland was very sharp in net, stopping 18 Fergus shots for the win. Walter Kirkness scored both Acton goals, with assists going to Callum Bowles, Mac Browes, Ryan Dunlevy and Michael Fatrdla. Fergus scored to make it 2-1 with three minutes left in the third, when a Fergus player appeared to kick the puck into the net after the whistle had blown. Fergus had some chances to tie it, but Overland kept them at bay and the Tanners hung on for the win. The series resumes in Acton on the 23rd, then hopefully not back to Fergus on the 25th or Acton on the 28th. Atom Tanners lose first game of finals to Fergus The Denny's Atom AE Tanners started their best of five game Tri-county final with a 3-1 loss to Fergus on March 20. Fergus outshot the Tan- ners 18-9, as Colton Wiens made some good saves to keep it close, particularly in the second period. Mitchell Brake scored Acton's goal unassisted on a great shot just under the crossbar, after rushing the puck through the Fergus defence. - The loss drops the Tan- ners to 9-4 against Fergus on the year, so there is still good reason to think that " Acton can come back ahd win the series. Next games are Tuesday the 23" in Fergus, then back to Acton on the 28" at a time to be determined. Game four will be on the 30" in Fergus, the fifth game if necessary would be on March 31 in Acton. PUTA OVW OL 853-0051 Acton skater, partner win silver at Nationals By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Quietly competitive and willing to learn. That combination catapulted Acton skater Maya Vermeulen, 13, and her dance partner Andrew Doleman of Hamilton, to a Silver medal at the Skate Canada Junior Nationals last month in Nepean. Vermeulen, a Grade 8 student at McKenzie-Smith Bennett School, began skating when she was a pre-schooler and has been an Acton Figure Skating Club member for six years, all of that time as a singles skater until last January, when she teamed up with Doleman. : "I was looking for a partner before I met Andrew because I wanted to go further in my dance," Vermeulen said recently, adding she still trains as a singles skater in Acton. Vermeulen can't explain their success. "I don't know what it is, but it works, I guess," she said, adding she and Doleman look alike and skate alike. The pair earned first place at the first juve- nile competition they entered last April, and continued their strong showing at the West- ern Ontario Sectionals in November, with first place ordinals across the board in two compulsory dances. A first place in the rhythm dance propelled them to the Junior Nationals, where Vermeulen said they were relaxed and not nervous. The team tied for first place after two com- pulsory dances and finished with the Silver after the rhythm dance, a polka. It was a finish Vermeulen wasn't expecting. "T wasn't aware at all of how we were go- ing to do -- some of the teams we had com- peted against before, but not all of them," Vermeulen said, adding they had a little stum- ble in the first dance, but quickly recovered. Vermeulen's dance coach of three years, Acton Figure Skating Club coach, Brian Worfolk, who got Vermeulen the tryout with Doleman, said she is very coachable and en- thusiastic and will try anything asked. "She is also sort of quietly competitive. She's not like bold and boisterous, but she's got this inner drive in her that she wants to be the best," Worfolk said on Monday. "Right away we knew it was going to be a good thing. I had a gut feeling," Worfolk said of the February 2003 tryout that ended with an invitation to skate with Doleman. Worfolk said the pair's rapid-ascent to the medal podium at the national championships in early February was not a fluke, but the result of a lot of hard work. "Jt was amazing. They didn't have a lot of experience, but because of Maya's attitude -- she wants to win -- they skated really well," Worfolk said, predicting the team could be the pre-novice national champions next year. The team took and passed the test to move up to pre-novice in December. Vermeulen and Doleman will perform two numbers in the Acton Figure Skating Club season-ending carnival on April 3 at Acton arena. They will also compete in the higher pre-novice division at Scarborough Skate later next month. With at least three training sessions a week in Thornhill, Hamilton and Oakville, skating is.a "lifestyle" Vermeulen said, adding it takes a lot of time and is alot of work, but it's "fun."
