On Friday, Smith said she was confidant the non-profit organization that provides cancer assistance services to 34 Acton clients and more in Georgetown, will hit its fundraising goal of $75,000 in Halton Hills with this month's campaign. Smith said she was not aware that officials with the Acton branch of the Cana- dian Cancer Society are concerned the CASHH cam- paign, running at the same time as the Cancer Society's annual April appeal for funds, could confuse donators. Asked if CASHH consid- ered a different month for its campaign, instead of using the traditional Canadian Cancer Society fundraising month, Smith said it was dis- cussed, but April was "convenient for us." "People have a choice to select their charities, so if someone is upset with us, we're not begging, we're just asking that -- we're providing wonderful service to Acton," Smith said, adding the CASHH letter delivered to all houses in Halton Hills did not say "we want your money, but just said, help us help oth- ers." Canadian Cancer Society Acton branch president Cathy Gerrow said CASHH initially said it would not can- vass in April, and not in Acton. "I guess our concern is that people are confused, and that they are aware that they are making a choice of who they want to donate to," Gerrow said on Sunday, adding the Canadian Cancer Society has a wonderful history and rela- tionship with a generous Ac- ton community. Liz Bailey, the Canadian Cancer Society's Acton branch campaign chair, said two canvassers found people who thought they'd already donated money to the Cana- dian Cancer Society, but unwittingly made a donation to CASHH after getting its i THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2004 appeal for help.
