West Nile positive crows found Larviciding in catch basins on public lands in urban ar- eas of Halton including Acton, began this week of June 7 and continues throughout the summer, now that larvae have been found in the catch _ basins. Larviciding is performed in an effort to reduce the * number of adult mosquitoes that can transmit West Nile virus (WNv) Two dead crows found on 100% Smoke-Free Public Places & Workplaces For more information or a cop) contact the Town of Halton Hill website at www.haltonhills.ca. June | in rural Milton, west of Regional Road 25, tested positive for WNv. During 2003, Halton's first positive bird was not found until July 19 in Burlington. "Halton Region will again carry out a comprehensive West Nile virus control pro- gram in 2004," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton's Medical Of- ficer of health. "Last year, there was significant West Nile virns activity in Halton f the By-l but fortunately, no reported human cases. Our 2004 con- trol program will again include detailed surveillance and monitoring, public edu- cation and larviciding of catch basins and standing wa- ter sites where required." Maps showing the loca- tions of positive birds, as well as standing water sites and catch basins larvicided, are available on the health de- partment's web site at www.region.on.ca/health. There have been no human cases of WNv in Ontario yet this season. WNv is a mosquito-borne disease. Mosquitoes can transmit the virus to humans after becoming infected by feeding on the blood of birds carrying the virus. Methoprene, a larvicide that is produced in pellet or briquet form, will be applied to catch basins. Health Cana- da's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), considers methoprene to be safe for use. . The health department con- tinues to advise Halton residents to remove standing water from around their homes as water that has been sitting for seven days or more-can create a breeding site for mos- quitoes. Also, any sightings of dead birds should be reported of the health department to as- sist with the tracking of WNv within the community. To report a dead bird or standing water, or for more information about West Nile virus, call the Halton Region Health Department (905- 825-6000), 1-866-442-5866 (toll free) or visit the health department's web site at www.region.halton.con.ca/ health.
