AMERIGIN ic MasterCard) E lg EXPRESS By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner T-shirts with porn, drug or hate slogans, visible under- wear, spiked dog collars and beachwear might be banned at Acton High School next school year. Those fashion trends may be outlawed in a new dress code'designed to be "condu- cive to a distraction-free learning environment." The schoel's code of con- duct includes some brief, general statements about stu- dent dress and while inappropriate clothing is not a "big issue" at Acton High, retiring principal Greg MacPherson said there are "some concerns, particularly in the warmer weather about students covering up more." On Friday, MacPherson said they need tighten up the expectations they have for student dress. "School is a place of busi- ness, it is a place of work for all of us, and we're also try- ing to instill in students the feeling that you dress for school and it's a learning ex- perience in terms of dressing for later life," he said. It's expected incoming principal Bert O'Hearn and the student council will seek more student input before approving a new dress code that would "strike a balance between individual expres- sion and society's expectation for appropriate attire-in the mutually-shared work environment." The draft dress code says beach footwear is not advised for safety reasons and would ban potentially harmful spiked jewellery or chains. Bandanas and do-rags would be banned along with Sight black bear near Limehouse Halton Police are urging rural Halton Hills residents to secure garbage in garages, empty their compost and re- move bird feeders following the sighting of a black bear near Limehouse on June 23. A tural resident was horse- back riding in the-area of 17 Sideroad, north east of the Fifth Line at about 8:30 p.m. when he saw a healthy look- ing bear exit the tree line and stop approximately 50 metres away. The rider told police the bear stood on its hind legs, looked at the rider and went back into the tree line. The rider rode in the other direction and contacted po- lice. Police checked the area but did not locate the bear. It was not aggressive and did not appear to have any cubs, the rider told police. The Ministry of Natural Resources was notified ofthe sighting. Ministry representa- tives stated that although bear sightings this far south in Ontario are rare, they do oc- cur. The Minsitry sourced other sightings this year in continued on page 15 clothing with images or ref- erences to sex, pornography, gender bias, substance abuse, violence of profanity. For girls, visible under- wear, backless tops, bare midriffs, torn clothing or ex- cessively short shirts or shorts would be banned. For boys, the draft bans undershirts worn as shirts, low rise pants with under- wear showing and torn clothing The draft policy calls for offenders to be counselled by staffand asked to remove the inappropriate clothing, or go home and change. Persistent opposition to dress code re- quirements will result ing other consequences including suspension. At Acton's Robert Little Public School, the dress code suggests that "bare tummies, muscle shirts, mesh shirts, short shorts, spaghetti straps and bare feet" are more suited to the backyard or beach than the classroom. Hats may not be worn in- side at the JK-to-Grade 5 school, and clothing or jew- ellery with inappropriate slogans is not acceptable. School secretary Pat Pope said inappropriate dress is "generally not a problem," but when it is, the offender is asked to turn the shirt inside out or change it. At McKenzie-Smith Bennett School the general policy calls for students to be dressed "appropriately and comfortably for the purpose of school and learning." The list of banned clothing is very similar to. the pro- posed draft at the high school, including a ban on clothing and jewellery that promotes tobacco, alcohol or drug use. Hats are banned at MSB unless worn as an expression of faith. Doel for Chris Scully G Leigh Trevail Saturday. July 10, 2004 8:00pm -1:00am. cton Legion Games Room $10/person...
