Dear Mr. McGuinty Thank you for responding to my previous email regard- ing automobile insurance for my son, My son is a 20 year old with driver's education, an Ontario G licence and a clean driving record As of right now, I still have not been able to obtain affordable insurance for him. I also have received no communication from the Honorable Greg Sorbara regarding this issue. Your letter to me dated Au- gust 4, indicated that you were forwarding my con- cerns to him. As | stated before it is criminal to treat our youth and young adults as guilty until proven innocent, as seems to be the case_in try- ing to obtain auto insurance. It is no wonder there are peo- ple driving the roads in this country without insurance. We have made it illegal to Supports per bag cost To the Editor, Hopefully within the next month or so, Halton Region's planning and pyblic works committee will orchestrate a full-fledged review -- as it promised -- of the environ- mentally-proactive option of having pay-per-bag garbage collection instead of the property assessment method currently in place. Like utility usage, energy and sewage costs, waste dis- posal costs should be directly related to the actual usage and not to the current prop- erty assessment costing method. In my opinion, it appears that fairness was waived to allow for expediency and, to a degree, as a knee-jerk re- action to support for growing costs of garbage. It's clear that all of us must reduce waste and to do this, each of us must accept finan- cial responsibility for the results of our waste manage- ment practices. Given a simple choice, 'm sure the Region will listen to public reason and authorize a quick migration back to fairness by having each of us pay for the waste we place out front for pick-up. I urge readers to call their councillors and to make sure that they understand the ur- gent need for improvement of our waste management prac- tices. The best way to make this happen is by having a pay- per-bag waste disposal system in place -- sooner than later. People are being forced to cheat and drive illegally, and that is wrong. As I already said I still have no affordable means to insure my son so he can commute to college in September. Another situation has also occurred again regarding auto insurance. My other son has recently been asked to be ready to help out his grand- parents by driving them to their doctor's appointments and other various outings. But it seems that he also can- not be insured on their policy or any other policy economi- cally. He has his Ontario G 2 driver's licence, also with his driver education certificate. His grandmother cannot drive because of health rea- sons and his grandfather needs some assistance also because of his health. Their appointments are often sepa- rate. They have tried to put him on as an occasional driver to help them out and all of these companies want at least $2000 for six months. This is a total rip off - and that quite simply is what it is. It is the responsibility of the governments to put some controls on these rip off art- ists (insurance companies). Remember, they would not be able to do what they are doing if it was not illegal to drive without insurance. I am, however, not even suggesting that we should let people drive without some kind of insurance, but this is way out of hand. I think it is time to act on this matter now and stop passing the buck like Mr. Chudleigh (of the Ontario . Conservatives, and our MPP) did in his condescending re- sponse to my initial letter. The Conservatives had ten years to fix this and did not. Every one should and must get together and fix this mess. It is not funny any more. We need action on this matter now.
