THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2004 THE NEW TANNER Halton Hills Rams capture 'D' title in Whitby tourney The Halton Hills Rams Masters Lacrosse. team competed in the Ontario Provincial Masters cham- pionships held in Whitby recently. The Rams lost a close game to Barrie 10-9 on Sat- urday afternoon, but managed to hold on and de- feat Owen Sound 12-11 on Sunday to win the D final. The Rams were backstopped by goalies Troy Latimer and Ryan Young. zs All weekend the Rams had a balanced scoring at- tack with contributions from Steve Turkosz, Jeff Gaynor, Kim Comman- dant, Ryan Weatherall, Jeremy Cooney and Brad Cripps. Solid defence was provided by Chuck Sevigny, Scott Holmes and Duane Piper. Coach Reg Dunlop was pleased that the first year team was able to be ranked in the top 10 provincially. The program is definitely much improved, and a higher finish is expected in 2005 with a lot of players expected to return., DEADLINE IS MONDAY AT 12 NOON Acton 1 wins championship of Girls under 16 Soccer By Malcolm Mills Eight teams competed for the championship of Girls Under 16 Soccer at Barbour Fields in Hillsburgh last Sat- urday. They then proceeded to beat HEADs 2 by a score of 5-3 with Lindsay Atkinson find- ing the net three times and singles from McGilloway and Giometelo. In a closely played match Acton | prevailed by a score of 2-1 on goals by Jessica Brake and Joanie Weaver with Giometelo replying for Acton 2. In the Under-5 "Parents vs Players" games, it looked like the parents were basically being shown how to play by their nimble offspring, while in the Credit Valley Shriners Under-7 Skills championship the winning team was the sky blue Triangle Color Labs team. Acton Soccer Club was grateful to the Shriners for helping with judging and totalling the scores. -- Submitted photo Andy's ends Vets' streak at four with 5-1 win By lan Watson Acton Vet Clinic's four game winning streak came to an end at a soggy MSB on August 24 in Boy's Under 14 soccer, Andy's team deserved to win, although the Vet Clinic parents agreed that the score line flattered the win- ners. (We didn't seek opinions from Andy's par- ents, it seemed so clear.) Final score Andy's 5, Acton Vet Clinic |. The match started brightly for Andy's, with Luca Mazzucco opening the scor- ing before the crowd had properly unfolded their chairs. The strong forward play by Andy's, with some fine running by Colin Adema and great hustle -- by Mazzucco, was good enough to break through the Vet Clin- ic's normally fortress-like defence, and the shooting power was good enough to elude the goalie's grasp four times in the first half. Once Andy's had a 3-0 lead, Vet Clinic started to pile on the pressure, but nothing would go right. "They can't BUY a goal", remarked a par- ent, but readers should please note that this was not in- tended as a suggestion of attempting to bribe officials, that's not the Vet Clinic style. Dave McLean's subtle flick of the ball was a re- minder of last week's stirring fightback (when Vet Clinic came back from 7-3 down to score 5 goals in the last ten minutes and win the game), but it was not to be. The sec- ond half only saw one more goal for Andy's, the rest of the play seemed to be in the other end, where the crossbar and the post, some fine goal keeping and some slightly mis-hit shots combined to protect Andy's lead. continued on page 19
