THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2004 Halton finds its first mosquito infected with West Nile virus The Halton Region Health department received confir- mation of its first West Nile virus (WNV) positive mos- quitoes of 2004. The mosquitoes were caught in a trap in the Trafal- gar Road/Cornwall Road area of Oakville. "West Nile is clearly present in Halton. We are in- creasing our surveillance work to keep track of virus activity," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Medical Officer of Health for the Halton Region Health Department. "We are in the peak risk weeks for human infection. Residents. should continue to ensure their per- sonal protection," he added. To date, there have been no human cases of WNV in Halton. However, seven dead birds have been confirmed with WNV this year, the lat- est a blue jay found in Burlington last Friday, the third for that city. Months ago, Politi noticed that a grave had no marker, just a red germanium that he later learned had been planted by members of the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary during their annual Decoration Day when they tend to the graves of vet- erans. "This guy (Rogers) fought for our country in WWI and deserves more than a flower," Politi said on Friday, adding he had a friend make up the cross and then his wife painted it and hand printed the vital details of his life -- born June 11,1890, died De- cember 20, 1975 -- culled from a burial registry book at MacKinnon Family Funeral Home. "We just thought that it was ashame that this guy had just a little flower marking his grave. This guy fought for us. You can't turn your back on something like that," Politi said, adding when he was getting the details of who the grave belonged to from the funeral home registry, he learned that there are 10 or 11 other unmarked graves of veterans in the Fairview and Dublin Line cemeteries. Legion member Ab Irwin has spent the last few months trying to find the names and then service record informa- tion for those 10 or 11 118 Alma Street, Rockwood 24 Hours "9am - 12am Or.by appointment - Corporate accounts welcome DR. "We have to supply them (Last Post) with service records and that information is hard to find in some cases," Irwin said on Friday, adding fellow Legionnaire Dave Crook is helping with the search for information. Crook said the issue of the unmarked graves came up following the last Decoration Day when auxiliary member Julie Conroy questioned why some veterans' graves were unmarked. "We've submitted infor- mation about the 10 or 11 veterans who are interred in unmarked graves in Acton to Last Post officials, but it's a long drawn-out process," Crook said on Friday. "We have to supply them with a lot of information, some of which has long been lost -- things like regimental numbers -- and we' ve had one that has almost been okayed for a veteran that is buried in Rockwood, but it could take another year before we see any markers" he said, adding he's been told no records can be found for two of the 11 names on the list, possibly indicating they were British army, not Canadian army vet- erans, and therefore ineligible for the program. Crook said by the end of the process they hope to have markers on all of the cur- rently unmarked graves of veterans. "If we can do that it would be kind of nice -- I'm sure the families would appreciate it if they were still around." surrounding areas.
