THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2004 THE NEW TANNER 17 Acton 1 Girls bring home soccer ch Saturday, August 28 the Under 16 Girls' soccer held their annual "Day of Champions" playoffs at Barbour Field, Hillsburgh. The Acton 1 squad, sponsored by Denny's In- surance, who finished in fourth place during league play, met the fifth place be Puslinch team in the playoff quarterfinal. The Acton 2 team played a strong game keeping most of the play in the Puslinch end for most of the tame but could not get the ball past the Puslinch keeper. After regulation time the score remained tied 0-0. The game then went into a 10-minute overtime with the score finishing again at 0-0. The soccer match then went into a 5-person shoot- out. Acton took the first shot but failed to score. The next shot by a Puslinch player put the ball past the Acton keeper. When the : UNDER-5 and UNDER-7 Fun Day was held on August 28 at MSB. The soccer season is now over for the younger groups of players. In the Under-5 "Parents vs Players" games, it looked like the parents were basically being shown how to play by their nimble off- spring, while in the Credit Valley Shriners Under-7 Skills championship the winning team was the sky blue Triangle Colo' r Labs team. Open to the public, the event will take place from 4p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Halton Regional Centre Auditorium, located at 1151 Bronte Road, Oakville. ~ "We are expecting up to 40 employers to exhibit," says John Ayling, Director of Business Development. "Many employers find job fairs to be an effective and efficient recruitment tactic - we are pleased to provide Halton organizations with this opportunity to meet their labour force needs." By participating in the Job Fair, exhibitors will be able to: promote employ- ment opportunities, meet skilled and motivated peo- ple seeking employment and receive résumés on the spot. The Region will be one of the featured em- ptoyers at the job fair. Amanda Brake took the first kick for Acton and made no mistake by putting the ball in the net. Next, it was Puslinch's turn to kick. Danielle Morin came up with a big save to give the Acton | team a 4- 3 victory anda move to the semi-finals. In the semi-final game, Acton | played HEADS 3 (Erin-Hillsburgh) and came up with a big game shutting out HEADS 2-0. The Acton team played a great defensive game and with the win moved onto the championship game. Joanie Weaver and Danielle Morin each shared in the shut-out mak- ing some outstanding saves throughout the game. Goal scorers for Acton were Amanda Brake and Laura Vickery. Championship game In the championship game, Acton | met Acton 2 who finished in first place in league play with only one loss all season and coasted to the playoff finals with two huge wins in the quarter and semi-fi- nal rounds. The Acton 2 Denny's Insurance squad only had 11 players for the final game. The match was exciting with play going end-to-end throughout the game. The rivalry between the two teams could not be more intense. Both teams gave all they could produc- ing a very exciting finale. Denny's Insurance got on the scoreboard early with a goal by Jesseca Brake. The score remained 1-0 until late in the half 'when Joanie Weaver scored what proved to be the winner for Acton 1. In an exciting second half the Acton 2 team tried to put the pressure on, but Acton 1 played a strong defensive game keeping the ball in the midfield area. With only minutes left in the game Acton 2 scored from a long kick by Sum- mer Giotemelo, breaking the shutout of Danielle Morin who played a solid game in goal making some great saves. The Acton | team re- ceived outstanding defensive play throughout the three play-off games from Sara Fox, Allisha Martineau, Nika Ashrafi, Niadine Rostom and Jesseca Brake. The for- wards also played outstanding during the three games keeping the ball in the midfield and pressure in the other team's end. Chelsea Frank, Laura Vickery, Amanada Brake, Stephanie Dodds, Victoria Duffield. Joanie Weaver and Danielle Morin (when ampionship not plying in net) all played exceptionally well. The coaching staff of Lance Morin, John Archibald and Shawn Richards were proud and delighted with the play re- ceived from the girls. "They gave all they had. Today, our girls played' with determination and heart and every girl on the field gave a 110% effort," said Archibald and Morin. "We could not ask any more from them." "Our girls played the best soccer I have seen them play this year," Archibald said. The Acton 1 team also received great support from Sarah Jordan and Caitlyn Bowen who both cheered the team on from the sidelines. Neither could participate due to injuries. The players and coaching staff would like to thank all the parents who showed up to the games and gave us great support. For parents who could'not attend, yow would have been proud to have seen your daughter play the best game of the season. We would also like to thank our sponsor Denny's Insurance. A "special" thanks go to the girls from both teams (Acton | & 2) who played extremely hard throughout the game and never gave up. Both teams showed true sportsmanship and made the community of Acton proud. Under 21 Girls finish - season in second place Acton Under 21 Girls' Soccer team ended their season with a second place finish, both in league play and the playoffs. Final standings for the North Peel-Halton Under 21 Girls' Soccer Inter-City league were: Bolton 1 36 Acton 28 Caledon 28 Bolton 2 26 Georgetown 14 Milton 13 Heads 1 10 Heads 2 1 In the resulting playoff action, Acton blanked Milton 5-0 in a quarter fi- nal match up. Kasia Sitarz stuck with two goals, sin- gles were scored by Kate Banks, Amanada Schroeder and Denise Barens. Allison Clemmens recorded the shutout. The semi-finals and final were played on Sunday (29) at Barber Fields in Hillsburgh. Acton played Caledon in their semi-fi- nal, a team they failed to beat in the regular season. The local team opened the game with Kasia Sitarz striking for two quick goals, Caledon replied with a goal to keep the " game close. Acton re- sponded by playing their best soccer of the season overpowering Caledon with a final score of 4-- 1. Sitarz added a goal with Denise Barens scoring one of her own. In the other semi-final Bolton 1 outmatched Georgetown 2-0. The final game against Bolton 1 saw Acton open the scoring with Sitarz, again finding the net on a pass from a free kick set play by Banks. The girls played hard against the tough Bolton squad but ran out of steam nearing the end with Bol- ton coming back for the win. Overall a great season from a young squad of players; 14 girls are 18 or under.
