4 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2004 Dinner Theatre attracts talent By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Looks like dinner theatre has a bright future in Acton as a dozen people answered a recent appeal for new blood for the Acton Old Town Hall Dinner Theatre group. Group spokesperson, Kathy Sanford said she was "thrilléd" with the turnout of new faces who are interested in all sorts of things, including making costuming and promotion. "One man has written a one-act play, and several want to help build sets, but not too many indicated an interest in acting, but that's okay," Sanford said on Saturday. The group, which staged its first perfor- mances last November, would like to present three productions a year, and so far has staged a play, a medieval evening and murder mystery with a catered dinner. Early in March, the group will present another murder mystery and they have been invited to stage another murder mystery at the Mohawk Inn, also in March. The local performances take place upstairs in the old fire hall at the Acton Town Hall, once with borrowed risers because there is no stage in the building -- yet, Sanford said. There had been a stage that projected over the old fire hall where Sunday school plays, amateur dramatics and minstrel shows were held. Sanford said an early survey of patrons found. that most people wanted dinner and theatre in one location so they could park their car once for a full evening of entertainment. Sanford said they would welcome more members for a wide range of jobs including publicity, set design and construction, acting, directing, props, ticket sales and ushering. The group will meet again in the January when they will have copies of the new murder mystery they will stage in March. Both Kurtis and Bert An- drews, father and son and owners of Andrew's Scenic Acres, a pick-your-own fam- ily farm on 10 Side Road that is in the protected countryside area, made emotional pleas to Council to reconsider asking the province to include the additional 4,000 acres. Kurtis Andrews asked Coun- cil to think of the people their decision would hurt. "Who will farm the farmland that is protected if there are no farmers? Young people's dreams can be dashed by this decision," he said, adding, "you have the power to stop a lot of pain and lost futures in the farming community." 'Holidays from Woman 2 Woman amr z Father, Bert Andrews, said the issue has brought Scotch Block farmers together. "We're rebelling at the au- tocratic ruling," Andrews said, adding it is "sad" that the farm- ers are not being listened td. "I'm pleading with you to consult the farming com- munity." Resident Sandra Scott, a homeowner whose property is intended to be included in the greenbelt, said she fully supports the plan that will help preserve the countryside and quality of life people are looking for. Resident Leslie Adams thanked Council for looking to the future to ensure that we can eat our own food, add- ing farmers maybe should be compensated. Following the public com- ments, Council supported Ward 3/4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal's motion to recon- sider Council's decision to recommend the additional 4,000 acres be included in the greenbelt. : Fogal then put forward an amendment, supported by all councillors but Mike Davis, asking the province to "con- sider inclusion" of the 4,000 acres, not "incorporate" it in the plan as was approved at the November meeting. Council also will ask the Minister of Municipal Affairs to "launch the appropriate consultative process with the affected community, includ- ing the Halton Hills rural community, prior to making a decision."
