THURSDAY, JANUARY 27, 2005 THE NEW TANNER 13 The Rockwood MULLER Council, Eden Mills reps address village concerns BY REBECCA RING Rockwood Miller A delegation represent- ing the community of Eden Mills appeared before Guelph/Eramosa township council last Monday night. Mr. Chris Wilson spoke on behalf of the Eden Mills and District Community Club, an apolitical group formed to represent the interests of the whole vil- lage. Mr. Charles Simon spoke on behalf of the VELS Committee (Village Enhancement and Livable Streets), a committee of the club formed to address traf- fic safety concerns. These groups held public meetings to hear the con- cerns of the villagers. In order for all voices to be heard, they held "kitchen meetings" of small groups of neighbours. This com- munity consultation has been ongoing for the last ten years. The result is.a list of. requests to council regard- ing traffic safety. According to Mr. Simon, approximately 1200 ve- hicles per day travel through Eden Mills. There is a pro- posal under consideration to rebuild the bridge on York St. Ifpassed, the new bridge will accommodate a larger tonnage capacity compared to the current bridge. The community wants the new bridge but is worried about increased speeds and vol- umes of traffic, especially large trucks. Mr. Simon said that currently many trucks larger than the 5 tonne limit are using the bridge and many drivers of all types of vehicles greatly exceed the speed limit in the area. The area around the bridge is the social centre of the community. Villagers walk their dogs, children play, and visitors come there to see the sights. Accord- ing to Mr. Simon,.there has been some near accidents and the community wants to act before somebody gets hurt or killed. One resident purchased a radar gun to provide evidence and create awareness of the speeding problem. He walks his dog every morning on Barton St., a small two-lane road with no sidewalk. He is disturbed by the excessive speed at which some people drive past him. The delegation requested that council forms a group that will work with the community groups to de- sign and implement some traffic calming measures. The community has sug- gested measures such as speed humps; establishing a community safety zone with signage and increased fines for speeding; build- ing a gateway of welcome to remind drivers that they are entering a village; re- viewing existing signage regarding its' location; pro- hibiting large trucks other than farm vehicles and those with business in the community. They want to work with the township and council to implement feasi- - ble solutions by the time the new bridge is opened. The community is even willing to fund raise to help cover the costs. : Council resolved to es- tablish a working group, which will consist of two council members and the manager of public works. This group will work close' ly with the community groups to achieve traffic safety in Eden Mills. Coun- cillor Chris White added that any agreements they make should be brought to the township council.
