THE NEW TANNER 13 Bantam Tanners suffer first loss in round-robin After starting the Tri-County play-off round robin series with two wins, the Acton Home Hardware Bantam AE Tanners suf- fered a disappointing 3-2 los to visitors from Milton on Tuesday, Feb. 22. - The Tanners took an early 2-0 lead on goals by David Elop from David Tysoe and Dylan Creasey assisted by Elop, before allowing three consecutive goals by the visi- tors. Poor defensive coverage by the Tanners in their zone allowed Miltons forwards to get open in the slot in front of the Tanners net resulting in two goals by the opposition. Later, a two-on-one by Milton turned into a partial breakaway allowing the visitors to Despite outshooting the opposition by a wide margin, the Tanners failed to beat the Milton goaltender who played particularly well in the third period when the Tanners tried to tie the match. To their credit the boys pressed hard near the end and almost tied the game with goaltender Dirk Van Soelen on the bench in favour of an extra attacker. The Tanners failed to play as a team in this game. Once behind on the scoreboard there were too many solo efforts. The first game against Flam- borough was a tough loss. The boys played hard and just couldn't get the puck over the goal line a couple more times. Carter Ebbinge got the first for Acton with Nick VanDery- chen getting the assist. Nick and Carter were on their game tonight getting a point with every goal. The second one was scored by Nick VanDery- chen from Carter Ebbinge and Michael Fatrdla. Mason Galway took a seat for slashing then came out strong for the third goal. Pearson last Thursday. Acton won the first game 25/21, but dropped the second 25/22 and the third 15/7. Coach Joyce Finlay said the team just stopped attacking in the third game -- partially because it is a very young team with two Grade 9 starters and only one Grade 12 player. "There's lots of room for growth and our younger players got a lot of valuable experi- ence for next year," Finlay said on Sunday. The Bearcats were 9-1 in league play, and tied for first place in their division with Georgetown. 4 "Just to go nine and one with such a young team was great," she said. Although Finlay had praise for the entire team, she said Ashley Nixon, a Grade 9 stu- dent, had a tremendous match, scoring a lot of Acton's points and making great blocks. Setter Melissa Bigg also played well. "We served one hundred per cent. We didn't miss a serve the whole match and that rarely happens," Finlay said, adding the team tensed up in the third game and stopped hitting. The win over Acton advances Pearson to a match with Peel to determine who goes to the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athlet- ics championship on March 8/9.
