THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 2005 THE NEW TANNER zt Bantam Tanners crowned Tri-County champions Drop Milton in two straight ee In the final game the goal scorers scored, the skaters skated, the checkers checked, the hustlers hustled, defenders defended and the goaltender stopped the puck resulting in a dominating performance with contributions from each player. On defence, Luca Mazzucco, Tyler Bandy, David Tysoe, Alex Wenzel and Bryan Curry not only stopped the Milton attackers through- out the game but contributed to the offence moving the puck quickly while collecting scoring chances, goals and assist. Forwards, Dylan Creasey, David Elop, Michael McKeon, Nik Aitken, Gordy McKeon, Colin Adema, Eric Neely, and Taylor McNabb worked hard at both ends of the rink crashing both nets to defend and to score. In net Dirk Van Soelen was near perfect stopping 19 of 20 shots, whilé fellow goal- tender Adrian Eppinger provided support and encouragement from the bench. Scoring for the Tanners: Taylor McNabb from Gordy McKeon and David Tysoe, Gordy McKeon from Luca Mazzucco, Mazzucco unassisted, Nik Aitken from Eric Neely, David Tysoe from McNabb and Gordy McKeon, Mazzucco from McNabb and Nik Aitken unassisted. Winning the Tri-County Championship is particularly gratifying considering that last September there was a real possibility that the Tanners would not have Bantam AE team at all. With only 10 skaters and no coaching staff the players and their families made a com- mitment to stay with the Acton Tanners. Soon after coaches Mark McKeon, Vince Grogan trainer, Mike McNabb trainer, Kim Bandy- Bollert and manager Nancy Elop stepped up to lead the team. With an addition from the Acton house league and support from the Tanners executive a team was formed. This group went on to an enjoyable and successful 2004 2005 season. Acton Home Hardware Bantam AE Tan- ners defeated Milton 7-1 on Tuesday March 29 to win the Tri-County Championship in two games. Members of the 2004-05 Bantam AE Tan- ners proudly representing Acton are: Colin Adema, Nik Aitken, Tyler Bandy, Dylan Creasey, Bryan Curry, David Elop, Adrian Eppinger, Scott Hofland, Luca Mazzucco, Gordon McKeon, Michael McKeon, Taylor McNabb, Eric Neely, Dirk Van Soelen, David Tysoe Alex Wenzel along with coaches Mark McKeon, Vince Grogan trainer, Mike McNabb trainer, Kim Bandy-Bollert and manager Nancy Elop. DEADLINE IS MONDAY AT 12 NOON Acton Soccer Club accepting registrations for new season By Ian Watson The Acton Soccer Club is preparing for the 2005 out- door season, which starts in May. Registrations are still being taken at Dollar Stretch- er Daze, and there are plenty of spaces in the 11-a-side age groups (Under-12 and older), and a few spaces in the younger age categories. So far,the number of play- a coach. To handle this, the balls and the schedule will be given to the parents and they will have to figure it out for themselves until one of them becomes qualified to be the coach. Obviously, it would be better if a coach was ap- pointed before the season starts. To do this, if you are interested you should contact the coaching coordinator ers registered .is up on last year, so we already know that the season will be the biggest ever for the club. This means that the fields will be used al- most all the time: great news buta sign that more fields will be required soon as Acton continues to grow. So there are players who have registered, the uniforms and equipment are on their way, and there are now dates for referee training sessions in Acton. The snow even melted off the fields for a few days so we could see that there is green grass ready to grow -- perfect for running, jump- ing, shooting and scoring. This year, the biggest con- cern regards coaches. The club has to obey new laws about volunteer screening, so coaches ean only be ap- pointed after an interview and after a police check has been reviewed. This could mean that many of the teams -- especially the younger ones --will start the season without More Sports on page 23 Insicde En Brian Morrison at 853-4602 or coaching@actonsoccer.or: . Professionally-run coaching clinics will be held in Acton in early May to teach you how to do it, or to act as a refresher for the experienced coaches. Lots of information about the Club is available on the sparkling and useful web-site at www.actonsoccer.org. When the puck finally dropped at the start of the game, there were almost as many Acton supporters as there were Brampton fans. Even with great support from the Acton fans, it was not enough as Acton lost the game 6-3. Brampton scored-two goals in the final minute of the game in the Tanners open net when Acton pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Brampton got an early jump on the local boys just as they have done in the past, taking a commanding three goal lead in the first period. Not to be outdone, our local team picked their play up a few notches in the second period on goals by Nick Ridler and Garrett Williams to bring the game within one. Acton took total control of the second period with many scoring opportunities but could not put the puck in the Bramp- ton net. As the period was The Acton Coes Club mae) pe Pra' is recruiting referees for the Tivo as ard Sheu ee cee mele ending, the referee made a call which gave Acton a penalty when fans said he should have taken a player from each team. This caused Acton to start the period with a man short and Brampton quickly capitalized on this power play and went ahead 4-2. Acton fought back late in the third period to bring the score within one when Brad Ethier scored a nice goal from the point. Acton put the pressure on once again but could not get the puck past the Brampton goalie. With a minute left in the game and Acton trailing by one goal, the Acton coach pulled the goalie for a sixth attacker, but a bad give away in their own zone by the Acton defence allowed Brampton to score in the open net. Brampton added another marker in the open net a few seconds later. The Brampton team is the 2005 Tri-County Champions with the Acton Tanners finish- ing as Tri-County Finalists. The coaches of the Acton team would like to thank their players for a great season, a thank-you to their spon- sor Galvcast and a special thank-you to all our fans that supported us this season. 185 Main St. N., Rockwood 856-4635 -- «end of season clearance up to... a 3 CLor, Es Must be turning 13 y/o th PRO SPORTS Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Composite Hockey stick repair, Skate sharpening Please call Pat Graham bye] for details or check out our website www.actonsoccer.org.
