This Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser is named for the nature of the event which involves teams of approximately 10 students col- lecting pledges and taking turns running, walking and strolling around the track to support the fight against cancer. Lasting from 7p.m. until 7a.m., Relay for Life is a non-competitive event that not only fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society but also carries out their mission to educate Canadians about cancer prevention. While students are welcome to pitch temporary hangouts for their teams in "Tent City," there will be lots of entertainment lasting the whole night. Live bands, contests, inflatable bouncy houses, Acton High School's own Im- prov Club, movie marathons and more are all lined up to entertain this year's expected 200 Relay participants over the 12 hour period. Inthe fall of 2002, Acton High School's student council was approached by the Canadian Cancer Society to become one of the first high schools in Ontario to host a Relay for Life. The event has continued to involve staff and students each year. In that past two years, this awesome night of fun, friendship and fundraising has involved well over 300 participants and raised over $26,000 in proceeds -- half of which have gone towards cancer research and one third of which have come back to programs within our own community. Each year, the event commences with April 17th, 2005 : Gate : Paden e' enden: F family & friends, ee Congratulations! Happy Birthday and best wishes on your first | |. birthday. Lf Lots of love. Later in the evening, the Luminary Ceremony involves the lighting of candles placed in hundreds of white paper bags upon which personal messages and touching words of commemoration, encour- agement and hope are illuminated to remember those who have been lost to cancer or who are currently battling it. Placed around the track to glow through the night, luminaries -- which are available at the school for $5 a piece - are a constant reminder of how deeply cancer affects so many Canadians -- the very reason for holding Relay for Life.
