THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2005 THE NEW TANNER 21 PeeWee Tanners wind up season in tournament To end off the hockey season, the Acton Tanners PeeWee AE team, R&M Construction entered into a tournament in Milton. Their first game against the Flam- boro Sabres resulted in a 3-0 Acton win. In the first period, Acton appeared disorganized and tired but seemed to pick up for the second, showing great hustle. With less than four minutes to go, Stefan Smelsky took a shot at the net that rebounded to Jesse Spurrell who passed it over to Jake Box for the first goal of the game. At 11:42 of the third period, Cole Fricker took a quick pass from Jonathon Porty right off the face off inside the Tanner blue line. Cole skated the puck up the ice and dumped it in behind the Flamboro goalie for Acton's second goal. For the final goal of the game, Brandan Lockyer hand- ed Cole Fricker the puck who then skated with Jonathan Porty up the ice to an empty net. Cole passed the puck unselfishly to Jonathon who. netted the third goal for a 3 to 0 win for Acton. Jesse Harris was awarded the MVP of the game for Acton. Orangeville tough Acton found a challenging opponent in the Orangeville Flyers in the second game. Acton opened up the period skating fast and hitting hard, with Orangeville answering right back. During the second, the Acton players were all over SEASON FINALE: Acton Curling Club finished the season with a three day benspiel at their Churchill Rd. facility, sponsored by MacMillan's Gourmet Frozen Food. The puck was freed up by Aaron Hillier who passed it to John White then Jesse Spurrell who came out from behind the net to tuck it in behind the Oran- geville netminder. Until the third, Acton suffered several missed chances at the net, but managed to keep their heads up in a very chippy game. With less than nine minutes to go in the third period, Or- angeville capitalized on a bad clear of the puck by Acton, scoring another one for the Flyers. John White was quick to answer back with the sec- ond goal for Acton to tic things up. Jesse Spurrell drew the assist on the play. That seemed to give Acton new life. Stefan Smelsky and Roger Kirkness teamed up to put the puck on the stick of Cole Fricker who took a bullet shot at the net for the third and winning goal of the game for Acton who won 3-2. MVP of the game was Rog- er Kirkness Tie Milton Saturday, April 2, Acton PeeWees played an old rival in the Milton Winterhawks. Although there were some nice checks thrown through- out the game, both sides seemed evenly matched. Although it was Milton who put the first mark up on the board, it was Stefan Smelsky who opened up the scoring for Acton with a great seeing eye shot to the top corner of the net In the second period, again on misplay of the puck by Acton, Milton took the lead with their second goal. Acton was quick to answer back with their second goal to tie things up once again. This time it was Jesse Spurrell and John White working together for the assist on a great backhanded goal by Aaron Hillier. The play kept going back and forth right into the third period until Cole Fricker took the puck from the face-off, skated to the Milton net and put an unassisted shot right past the Milton netminder. While Acton was trying to keep the pressure on the Milton defence, Travis Brown was checked off his feet. While still on the ice, Travis received a pass from Roger Kirkness off Stefan Smelsky and took a shot from his knees and pocketed the go-ahead goal. Cell: (905) 703-1299 to keep the Milton forwards out of the Acton zone, Milton was quick to match the last goal to tie up the game once again at 4-4 where it ended. MVP of the game was Cole Fricker For the final game of the Saturday leg of the play- offs, the PeeWees faced a brand new team from Essex. Essex's only loss was also to Milton so Acton was in for a challenging game. Once again, it was the opposition drawing the first goal of the game. Things continued to be grim for the Tanners as they took two quick but controversial penalties. Although Essex was not able to capitalize on the penalties, Acton had some difficulties killing them off. At 9:18 of the second pe- riod, Essex, again, put a mark up on the board to go ahead 2- (0. Acton seemed to be getting frustrated with the officiating not calling any penalties for Essex through two periods, but managed to maintain a great level of play throughout the second period. In the third period, Acton coach, Jodi Hillier seemed to inject some energy into his players. Acton applied more pressure on the Essex defence and dominated the play in the Essex end. During a scuffle around the net, Cole Fricker managed to free up the puck and pocket the first and only goal for Acton. For the fi- nal 10 minutes of the game, Acton. defence appeared to lose steam taking unnecessary penalties and missing plays. Although it was not the way the Tanners wanted to end off their season, the team played four hard fought games in two days and ended the tourna- ment with a respectful third place finish. MVP of the game was Jesse Spurrell who also came away with the True Grit Trophy of the tournament. Many thanks go out to Jim Wilson Chevrolet in Orillia and Magna ir Milton for sponsoring the Acton PeeWee AE Tanners in the tourna- ment. - Thank you also goes out to: Coach Jodi Hillier, As- sistant Coach Randy Box, Trainer Richard Kirkness for leading the team in a fun filled, energizing season and Mark Lockyer for stepping in to Assistant Coach when we needed, Manager Wendy Spurrell for all her behind the scenes efforts to ensure that the team kept running smoothly throughout the sea- son.
