12 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2005 Acton honours Veterans at Candlelight Vigil By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Ten years ago, a small Dutch child carefully, rever- ently, knelt at the gravestone of a Canadian soldier buried far from home and lit a com- memorative candle marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Holland by Canadian Forces. Next Thursday, (May 5) Acton children are invited to place candles around the Acton Cenotaph in a Candle- light Tribute to recognize the sacrifices and achievements of Canadian veterans. The Candlelight Tribute also includes two silent pro- cessions to the Cenotaph, an opportunity for children to shake hands with veterans who made sacrifices and a reception at Legion Branch 197: Candlelight Tribute committee member Joyce Buchanan said there is no cost to students for the can- dles and this year, all students are invited. "Last year, we invited 25 students from each school, but this year we decided to open it up to everyone. We didn't turn anyone away last year, or the year before, but we thought we'd like to say that we welcome everyone," Buchanan said on Monday. "There are fewer veterans every year for us to thank. This is a good way for us to teach the children about what our veterans did. We are getting in touch with as many of the veterans as we can, whether they are Legion members or not, to invite them to the ceremony so the children can shake their hands," Buchanan said. Buchanan said she is glad to volunteer for the Candlelight Tribute project, although she finds it emo- tional work. "Tt gets emotional when you see the kids. They are so eager when they come to the ceremony they are emotional about it and I get emotional."
