THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2005 THE NEW TANNER It may seem commercial to some, but I've decided, Mother's Day is definitely a necessity. I think I came to this realiza- tion after reading all the kids' ode to mom in Mother's Day contests about why their mom is the best. Some think their mom is great because they make cook- ies. Some think it's because they help them with their homework. When you're younger I don't think you really understand the importance of Mother's Day. It seems it's more of a reason to make a craft project at school. In contemplation of moms in my life, I decided the Dude's mom is a great mom for the reason that the Dude was a 12 Ib baby and she had him at home. I remind him of this every year on his birthday when | proclaim she is the one who really should be getting the present, not him. My grandma was a great mom. Among many things I remember about her, I think what made her great was surviving all my dad's antics when he was young. Of course, the day she finally had it with him and his wanderings then tied him to the pole in front of their gas station, might not get her parent of the year award to- day but the story today provides \great amusement. ' My mom is a GREAT mom! ; By Angela Tyler. Over the past few days, I've started thinking about my mom and why I think she's great. First, two daughters is a challenge for anyone. There are good times and there are times when we probably all needed a vacation from one another. As my sister was leav- ing her teenage years, I was just entering them, tossing my mom into a decade of teenage angst. My sister and I were and are at many times completely opposite, but one thing was the same...we put my mom "through the ringer" more than once. She suffered through hormonal mood swings, not all of which were good moods and she per- severed through tantrums and endless phases. I pelted her with stuffed animals when she tried to get me up in the morning for school, which I soon learned was not acceptable. She put up with my picky eater problem, - agreeing to let me eat french fries with ketchup and drink _ Tang orange juice on the living room fireplace hearth when I was four. She's gone through endless daughter arguments and been there for us through everything from. school accomplishments, tap dance recitals, piano lessons and boyfriend heart break. She made sure she watched every town parade when my sister and I played in the Acton Citizens' Band. When she returned to the business world after I started school, she made sure when I was home for lunch, that she was there. The things she's done for me and my sister and all the things we've put her through is what makes my mom a great mom. However, in thinking about all these things over the years, there's something more impor- tant that makes her absolutely brilliant. : When I was about 10 years old, I wanted to be named Con- nie. I craved that name so much. I absolutely adored the name. I dreamed and wished my parents had named me Connie. My mom knew it was a phase and ignored me. She knew | am absolutely not a Connie. What makes a great mom? In my opinion a great mom is one who loves their children, sup- ports them and gives guidance, listens when needed, and knows something she just cant live without from one of our local area merchants! when to ignore them. oy Our Hostess Ne ee" will bring gifts and greetings.
