THURSDAY, MAY 12, 2005 THE NEW TANNER 3 Churches celebrate Pentecost Sunday Acton Ministerial Association in an attempt to restore Pentecost to its rank of second only in the Christian calendar to the Resurrection (Easter) is holding an Ecumenical Pentecost Celebration at the Acton arena this Sunday at 3p.m. Pentecost is one of the oldest celebrations of the Christian community. It is gener- ally regarded as the actual founding of the Church when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles in the "upper room." A confused and relatively weak fledgling community of Jesus' disciple was thus able to integrate the importance of the Resurrection and what Jesus was all about. "From that mo- ment on the followers of Jesus proclaimed the Gospel with the power of that same Spirit," and the rest is history. "Pentecost Sunday is a day to celebrate hope, a hope evoked by the knowledge that God through His Holy Spirit is at work among His people," one theologian has written. The ecumenical service is being held on the floor of the arena where chairs will be set up. A combined choir from the participating a | la eel (Sroup churches will lead in song. "T got amazingly surprised when the orders kept com- ing in," said Tayler Hunt, the main student who raised $780 for cancer through the sale of yellow bracelets. The Robert Little School Grade 5 French Immersion student was watching Oprah, with her mother one morn- ing recently when Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor and six-time Tour de France cycling winner, was the. guest. "He was talking about these bracelets that he was starting and how he had had cancer and | thought that it was perfect because I was trying to raise money," Hunt, 11, said. She said she learned about the Armstrong's battle with cancer on the Internet, and that the yellow silicon brace- lets are stamped with the words "LiveStrong." LiveStrong is the name of an educational program at the Lance Armstrong Foun- dation, created for cancer survivors and their families, friends and caregivers, and proceeds from sales of brace- lets help fund the programs. With the help of her teach- er Jean-Paul Cousineau, Hunt made a presentation on the LiveStrong bracelets to a school assembly. An order form went home with a newsletter, creating a demand for the bracelets that surprised and delighted Hunt and her best friend/chief helper and fellow student Jaslyn Bourgeois. Hunt said she thinks peo- 7 Ecumenical Pentecost __) Celebration May 15, 2005 at the Acton Arena at 3 p.m. ple were so generous and in some cases ordered multiple bracelets because "cancer is such a horrible disease and people want to find a cure." Cousineau was not sur- prised at Hunt's fundraising efforts. He said, she's "always - looking out for someone else and trying to find ways to help -- she's your model student" who does well aca- ~ demically and socially, and -- last year led a cleanup of the creek near the school. Cousineau said they hoped to raise $1 per student with the bracelet orders, but at $780, they are almost at $2 per student, a "phenomenal" amount. "That lets you know how big some of the hearts around this area are, which is nice to see," he said. Hunt ordered the bracelets last week and hopes they will arrive within 30 days. --| Working Together ..
