Beat the Heat You may have noticed that Southern Ontario has been under an extreme heat alert. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, heat stroke and heat exhaustion are serious hot-weather emergen- cies and must be treated as a medical. emergency. To stay safe, they suggest the follow- ing. Keep coal on hot days by limiting exertion and staying inside. This is especially im- portant for those at high risk, such as children and senior citizens. Replenish fluids. Drink at least six 8-0z glasses of fluid each day to prevent dehydration. Try freezing fruit juices for a heart healthy, fluid-filled snack. If you feel hot, cool down with a tepid bath or shower, or spend time at an air-conditioned mall In the championship game the Rockwood Celtics were able to run away with a win against Erin Mills. Talk to your family doctor about any medi- cations you are taking. Many medications for high blood pressure and heart disease are diuretics and can contribute to dehydration, a major cause of heat-related illness. In addition to health issues, pay attention to electricity consumption. Extreme hot weathet results in extremely high energy use. To help ease the strain on the system, try to reduce your energy use. Do laundry, dishes, etc. dur- ing off-peak hours (10pm to 7am). If this is not possible, then try to limit use to mid- peak hours (7am to 11am and 5pm to 10pm). Try turning the temperature on your air conditioner up a degree or two.
