Here are some classic signs of a criminal Tele- marketer: If it sounds to good to be true You've won a big prize in a contest that you don't recall entering. You're offered a once in a lifetime investments that offers a huge return. You're told that you can buy into a lottery ticket pool that cannot lose. You must pay or you can't play "You're a winner!" but you must agree to send money to the caller in order to pay for delivery, processing, taxes, duties or some other fee in order to receive your prize. Sometimes the caller will even send a courier to pick up you money. The caller is more excited than you are The crooks want to get you excited about the "opportunity" so that you won't be able to think clearly. It's the manager calling The person claims to be a government official, tax officer, banking official, lawyer or some other person in authority. The stranger calling want to become your best friend The person calls you by your first name and asks a lot of person questions. Criminals love finding out if you are lonely and willing to talk. Once they know that they'll try to convince you that they are your best friend after all, we don't nor- mally suspect our friends of being crooks. Will that be cash ...or cash? Often criminal telemarketers ask you to send cash or a money order, rather than a cheque or credit card. Cash is untraceable and can't be can- celled. And, Crooks have difficulty establishing them selves as merchants with legitimate credit card companies. Officials have not released the actual bacteria counts, but water with more than 100 E. coli per 100-milli- litres of water is unsafe for recreational swimming be- cause of the risk of intestinal and respiratory infection. Slip! eur] Slap! CC Ry Cc cue) EEE etek The old beach in Prospect Park was posted as unsafe for swimming and, reere- ational during thé Weeks of June 14 and 21, open during the week-of the 28, and closed during the week of July 5. Results of tests on water samples taken on Tues- day (July 11) should have been posted at the Region's website by late yesterday (Wednesday) notifying the public whether the wa- ter was safe or unsafe for swimming and other water sports. Sampling began June 14, and will continue until the first week of Septem- ber at the old beach and two beaches in Burlington, one in Milton and two in Oakville. A history of closures be- cause of unsafe test results prompted Halton to close the Boathouse beach in Prospect Park after the 2003 season. Last year, the old beach was closed 35 per cent of the time, or 28 days. Beach water quality infor- mation is available 24-hours a day by calling toll free 1-866-442-5866 or visiting www.region.halton.on.ca/ health 4 TALKING SOCCER: Marc Van den Akker, left, Acton Soccer's most accomplished referee and long-time coach, shares a light moment with new recruit Steven Slowka. - Chuck Tysoe photo
