When the station is built, additional part-time personnel will be necessary. Like the present headquar- ters and Acton stations, it will have a composite staff of both full and part-time members. Chief of Operations John Martin says, "With the third station, our complement of part-time staff will be in- creasing by an additional ten fire fighters. We hope these additional staff members will be from the immediate area where the station will be located." Crucial in the hiring pro- cess, is the travel distance a firefighter must drive to reach their respective sta- tion. The current criteria is to give individuals who live within three (3) kilometres of the station preferential consideration when hiring. Part-time staff must live within five (5) kilometres (3 miles) to the station that they are assigned. "Because time is critical when responding to emer- gency incidents, it is not feasible to have fire fighters living beyond this distance," Martin explains. Director of Fire Services Bob Meads says, "The re- cruitment drive will run from August 1-19, 2005 with the applicant evaluations be- ing conducted from August 29-September 23, 2005. The anticipated recruit start date is October 3, 2005". "With the additional ten recruit fire fighters, staffing levels will rise to fifty-five part-time fire fighters stationed in the Georgetown urban area," Meads says. Bees like this one caught in motion by Danielle Mclsaac's lens are on exhibit at Country Heritage Park. Park exhibit 'un-bee-lievable' Driving into Country Heritage Park you can almost hear the faint buzzing noise of over 10,000 bees just recently located in the Plant Centre Exhibit building. The exhibit's main feature is a hive made of glass, with a clear tube attached leading directly outside for the bees to pass in and out of the hive. The new exhibit explains the bee's role in pollination and honey production, as well as allowing a close up look into the bee's habitat, caste structure, and communication system. Since the hive is behind glass, it offers children and adults an excellent view of the hive without the possible concern of being stung. Starting in September the new exhibit will be added to the education programs at the Park for school tour groups, Guides, Brownies, Sparks, and general public tour groups. "The education program will benefit greatly from this new exhibit," comments Tammy Ballantyne, the education coordi- nator at Country Heritage Park. "It teaches children the fundamentals of how honey is made, plants are pollinated and how bees communicate. They can also overcome any fear they might have towards bees and discover that they are pretty harmless and very beneficial insects." Day-trippers can visit the new exhibit on weekends in July and August. Country Heritage Park is nestled in the shadow of the Niagara Escarpment south of Highway 401, on Tremaine Road west of Milton.
