Halton Hills school board trustee Ethel Gar- diner is heartened that the Minister of Education, Gerard Kennedy, is paying attention to the unrest © with the Halton District School Board. In May, five trustees wrote to Kennedy to ask that he intervene and appoint a supervisor after a 6-5 vote of trustees drastically changed the way the board operates, prompting the director of education Dusty Papke, to abruptly resign. The letter was signed by Gardiner, Burlington trustees Debbie Downs and Janie Hames, and Mary Chapin and Kelly Amos of Oakville. Since then, Gardiner said she's repeatedly kept calling the Minister and his officials, but hadn't heard anything until she read in a news- paper interview that Education Minister Gerard Kennedy and his ministry will look into the controversy dogging the Halton board, includ- ing the reported $600,000 severance paid to Papke. "Right across Halton, it appears that people are expressing an interest in the ($600,000 sev- erance) expenditure, I mean, it's huge...I think there an interest and I think the board has to be held accountable for making those decisions," Gardiner said. The rain can never be too late and within reason, it can never be too much for local farmsers who are facing one of the hottest and driest sum- mers in recent years -- forcing them to face the prospect of lower yields and possibly poor quality for some crops. Perry Hunter, general man- ager of Anthony Acres, a large cash crop operation based on the Fifth Line, said the rain on the weekend was "too late" for the wheat. "We're basically at harvest right now, and we'd be best not to have rain because it would begin to impact qual- ity with sprouting," Hunter said on Sunday as forecasters called for torrential rains for this area. He said the corn and soya beans still need the rain, in any amount. The crow was reported to the Halton Health Dept. on July 15 and it was confirmed with WNV on July 22 by the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre in Guelph. "Finding a dead bird that is positive for West Nile Virus alerts us to the fact that the virus is in our Region," said Dr. Monir Taha, As- sociate Medical Officer of Health for Halton. "From now until the end of the West Nile virus season is really the time when people throughout Halton have to be careful about protecting themselves and their fami- lies from mosquito bites." There have been no human cases of WNV in Ontario so far this season. Mosquitoes can trans- mit WNV to humans after becoming infected by feed- ing on the blood of birds carrying the virus.
