Georgetown 905-877-3163 Guelph 519-826-5365 www.oxfordlearning.com CHALK BOARD EVANGELIST: Brantford-based evan- gelist; Henry DeRoos will be at the Leathertown Festival with his chalk board and evocative questions. -- Chuck Tysoe photo 'Joe Schmo missionary' at Leathertown Festival "Just an ordinary, Joe Schmo Missionary," is how Brantford's Henry DeRoos describes himself. The Ca- nadian director of Open Air Campaigners, who regularly plies his trade on the streets of Toronto} the Beaches area and Hamilton, has also presided at the entrance to the Harvard Law School and many points large and small between. And _he's to-be séén with his mobile pulpit/storyboard among the crowds at Acton's Leathertown Festival, at the invitation of Acton Baptist Church. DeRoos has spoken at over 100 churches Can- ada-wide and numerous conference venues; a for- mer science teacher with degrees from Western and Guelph Universities, he has also been invited to speak in many schools on one of his favourite subjects, the scientific weakness of evolutionary theory. DeRoos, in town recently to share his experience and methods at a seminar, said he got into the work after watching and assisting oth- ers for about a year; he still gets nervous before going to work with paint, brushes and microphone. The secret, he says, is simply being "an ordinary person who is will- ing to be used by God." On a recent Saturday in the Guelph downtown, DeRoos pointed to-a.side- walk location only, yards from the train station and related "how, six years ago a young woman drug ad- dict stopped to listen to his gospel message and was dramatically changed. She had been on her way to jump in front of a train. "Some days it seems that not much happens, or no- body is listening," said DeRoos. But he and fellow missionaries (who work in 22 countries) have hundreds of such experiences. As he spoke to passers-by on this day, a cyclist circled back dangerously in traffic to share some profanities. DeRoos took it all in stride; just such a young man in Toronto some time ago, was back exactly a year later to help hand out Christian literature and Bibles. As you will have read previously in The New Tan- ner, the federal government has declared 2005 as the Year of the Veteran. It is hoped you turned out for the parade we held last month. As part of the record, your Legion is hoping to have all local WW11 veterans sign a banner the same as the ones currently displayed on Mill and surrounding streets. This is available at the Branch, and we would like any allied WW11 vet who so wishes, to sign it. It is hoped to have this ban- ner framed and on display at the Branch before the Remembrance Dinner on November 5, 2005. If you require further information Br: ANCUL Seem a LEGION NEws Z. By James Hayes 197_& * eae Comrades: please contact the Branch by phone at 853-0910. The Leathertown Festival is being held this Sunday, August 7. As usual, the Branch will have a booth on Mill Street to showcase the Legion and its work in the community. Advise any member of the executive if you are prepared to assist in setting up or manning the booth. Bar Crews chairman, Comrade Willy Tallon has scheduled a Smart Serve course for 9a.m. on Satur- day, August 13. Members who are interested in do- ing volunteer bar work in the auditorium are recom- mended to sign-up at the bar Yours in comradeship.
