The young AHS student now goes to the Common- wealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, where athletes hope the weather is more condu- cive to athletic prowess. DEADLINE IS MONDAY AT 12 NOON Squirt Girls bats silent but fielding is amazing By Vicki Anderson Oh, My Goodness! If the Shopper's Drugmart Squirt Girls' bats were working as well as their fielding, they would be unstoppable. On July 27 the girls travelled to Grand Valley and lost 9-0 in five innings. That might sound terrible but anormal game is a mercy of 5 runs per inning and that happens a lot, but not last night. We only al- lowed 9 in 5 innings, which is remarkable. Katrina Harding who has only pitched a few in- nings up till now, stepped up on the mound for the full five innings and did a great job, too. We started the first inning with a strikeout, then a pop up to Ashley Stokman on third and then for the third out it started with a hard hit to center field. Amanda Battams chased it down and threw it to Katie Patchett at shortstop and she threw it home to Courtney Brown, and Court- ney put the tag on for the out. Awesome! We only al- lowed one run. In the second inning again Katrina started with a strike- out. After just missing the first time, this time Katie -- Patchett drilled it to first to Karla McDougall for the out. The third out was a steaming bouncer at Jasmine Jones at second base; she grabbed it and threw to Karla for the out. Wow! We allowed 2 runs making it 3-0. In the third inning a hit went to Kristine Ferris in left field, she got it threw it to second, but overthrew Jasmine, but Amanda Bat- tams was covering and caught it and made a perfect throw to Ashley Stokman on third, who put the tag on get- ting the runner out. Double Wow! For the second out Katrina got another strike- out. Then once again the hit was to Katie Patchett and she scooped it up threw it to Karla for the out, again. Just a reminder neither of these girls have ever played ball before. Grand Valley got three runs totalling-6;.which was okay because that didn't stop our girls. In the fourth inning Katrina started with a strikeout, then a long fly ball was headed out to Kris- tine Ferris in left field, who also is a first time player, and bang right in her glove. The girls and their fans were ecstatic, as were the coaches. Then the runner who had made it to third decided to tease Courtney behind the plate by taking a large leadoff. That didn't scare Courtney; she threw to Ashley and the girl took off for home where Ashley threw it back to Courtney and, shazam she was out. Grand Valley did manage to score one more making it 7-0. Just when you think it can't get any better. Bang, the fifth inning begins with a hit back at Katrina who snags it and throws to Karla for the out. Then the next girl hits one smokin' to third where Miranda Rodda puts her glove down and low and behold it's in it. It was too late with the throw to first, but it was okay. With two on base the next batter-hits to' Katie and once again she drilled it to the outstretched Karla, who made the catch. And then Katrina finished the game the same way she started, with a strikeout. Katrina was great; she aver- aged a strikeout every inning. They did score 2 more, making it 9-0. The only thing a little disappointing was our bats. Ashley Stokman got a single and a pop-up. Courtney Brown got on with a single and that was about it, other than a few fouls. But even the coaches from the other team commented on some of the plays the girls made. Ponsonby wins again Shopper's Drugmart Squirts played a great game against Ponsonby on July 25 but lost 14-10. They were winning until the last inning and had 2 out but just couldn't get the final out, although it wasn't for lack of trying I tell you. "Maybe we actually were trying too hard, and then started to panic, " says Vicki Anderson. Katrina Harding and Desiray Ebbinge once again were amaz- ing on the mound. They shared duties with 2 innings each. Courtney Brown charged out from behind the plate and caught a pop up. Katie Patchett scooped a grounder at shortstop and made an even better"hrow to first, which Karla McDougall just missed. Ashley Stokman caught a fly at third. Desiray caught a pop up on the mound. Laura Labelio got a grounder and tossed it to Karla on first for the out twice in a row, Courtney Brown chased down a pass ball and threw to Desiray Ebbinge, who ran in to cover home. They got the runner out both times. Miranda Rodda chased a good hit down and got it in quickly. "We are making the right plays, we are just missing the outs," says Anderson. The bats were pretty lively with Ashley Stokman hitting two singles. Desiray Ebbinge got a single and a great hit to right centre for a triple. Katrina Harding, Laura Labelio, Celeste Slater, Jasmine Jones and Kristine Ferris all hit the ball. Amanda Vickery stood her ground in the batter's box. Amanda Battams got two walks with a good eye!
