THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2005 Limehouse soccer player represent Ontario at Nationals As a member of Mississauga Erin Mills Girls under 18 soccer team, Me- lissa Bigg will represent Ontario at the National championship to be held in Sydney Nova Scotia, after the team won the Ontario Cup GU18 championship. Melissa's grass roots started with the Georgetown Youth soccer club when she was 5 years old. As she progressed through the house league system it was quite apparent that she possessed the right skills which would allow her to play up at an older age group. At age 9 she started to play up an age group as she advanced from select to rep soccer. Bert Zonneveld GSC coach says: "T have been involved with coaching soccer many decades, at all age levels, from 8 year olds to semi pros. Melissa is amongst the most naturally gifted athlete that I had the pleasure of coach- ing. She constantly wants to know more THE NEW TANNER about the game and was forever asking me to teach her more about physical skills as well as tactical. She would then demonstrate these skills at the next practice or game. Naturally as her coach, it was a pleasure to watch her use the skills in a game. Amongst her many strengths on the field is her peripheral vision; at all times she seems to know where her team mates and opposing players are. Her natural endurance allowed her to play every minute of the game. She is multi-dimensional (a coach's dream) as I played her in almost every position were the team needed her most." Two seasons ago Melissa decided to " start playing for the Erin Mills Soccer Club where she was quickly recognized as having the skills which would allow her to play in the Ontario Youth Soccer league as well as assist the U21 Ontario Women's Soccer league. "When Melissa joined Erin Mills, it was clear that she possessed the skills and the right attitude to make a contri- bution at a higher level of play. Initially there was an adjustment period for Me- lissa in joining our team, but she slowly became accustomed to the new level of play and in a matter of two years she has become one of the most consistent players on our team and a player that our team looks to in order to perform as best as we can," says Erin Mills coach Joe Corapi. Melissa and her team-mates are excited about the recent Ontario Cup win. The Erin Mills team which Melissa joined in 2004 has won five Ontario Cups over the last four years. This year will be the third time the team will represent the Province at the National Soccer champions which are only held for 14, 16 and 18 age groups. 13 Melissa Bigg eezeccscsos eozesecee Acton teams win, lose in girls' soccer DEADLINE IS MONDAY AT 12 NOON ( ACTON MINOR SOCCER REPORT UNDER 10 Aug. 10 Aquality Irrigation -- 3 Open & Shut Doors --2 Aquality goals: Andrew LaFrance, JanWillen Lam- berink, Julie Holmes. Squirts try hard but are nosed out by Drayton and Hillsburgh teams Off to Drayton/Moore- field on August 8 the Shopper's Drug Squirt Girls lost 12 -- 11. Once again the opposition scored twa runs in the final inning to take the lead away. Celeste Slater made a fantastic catch in left field. Laura Labelio made a good scoop and made the throw to Katrina Harding for the out. Laura also got another to Kristine Ferris on first getting another out. Great game, Laura and Celeste. Desiray Ebbinge was catcher for an inning and made some good throws to Ashley Stokman on third, keeping runners close to the base. Katrina and Desiray shared pitching again and are becoming quite the duo. Desiray also got a double and a single. Ce- leste Slater walloped a double and a single. Kris- tine Ferris, Katie Patchett and Karla McDougall all got singles as well. Kar- la's father almost fell off the bench jumping for joy. Ashley Stokman just slammed a homer. Amanda Battams even fouled some off. We also met Trent and Cole at Dairy Queen for a treat after the game. Hillsburgh better We are down to the fi- nal few games and the girls went to Hillsburgh on Wednesday night to play a makeup game. We lost again 12 - 7. I really wish all of you could see the change in every one of the girls, though. We may not win a lot, but we sure try the hardest. Ashley Stokman was on her game catching a pop- up, a line drive and got the throw from the catcher and swung around getting the runner trying to steal third. Ashley also smacked the ball for a single and a double. Desiray Ebbinge also had a super night. She pitched fantastic and hit a double and a single. Katrina Har- ding got a single. Karla McDougall was also one of the girls who caught a pop up on first base. Courtney Brown got a double. And Celeste Slat- er has really turned her bat on getting two singles. Kristine Ferris hit a few but Hillsburgh got her out on first. Amanda Battams was queen of the fouls tonight, but that's okay in our eyes a hit is an accomplishment, no matter where it ends up. We fought a good fight and hopefully we will get another chance in the final tournament, August 19,20 and 21. -- Vicki Anderson x 4 Proud member of the Canadian Jiu Jitsu Association Acton Jiu-Jitsu (519)853-2424 5A MILL STREET, E. ACTON E-mail: jiujitsul@sympatico.ca Last week in Girls Under 18 soccer Acton hosted Milton 2 at MSB fields and in a closely contested match Milton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Allie Martineau replied for Acton early in the second half. Acton played a very com- petitive final 45 minutes before a late goal by Jessica Rietman, who scored all three of her team's goals and secured the win for Milton. In the Girls Under 16 division Acton 2-Town & Country Cleaning posted two away game victories last week. They easily de- feated an undermanned Georgetown 3 and spread the scoring amongst Kim Trumpa, Lauren Vermeu- len, Linda Larose, Nicole Scott, Melissa Rowley and Alaina Mills. The shut- out was shared by Joanie Weaver and Kim Trumpa. The following evening they travelled to Hillsburgh and ran their record to 7-2-2 on the strength of a 4-2 vic- tory over Hillsburgh-Erin 2 with Maja Vermeulen and Joanie Weaver sharing the goals. Unfortunately our other local team Acton 1- Denny's Insurance dropped their only game of the week to Bolton by a score of 3-1 with only Sarah Glassford being able to find the net for Acton. Following one more week of regular play, tournament seedings will be finalized for the championship week- end on August 27-28 INFORAMATION CALL AMES 905-877-8339
