She competes for the fun of it. But winning 10 medals in canoeing at the World Masters Games in Alberta last month proved a lot of things to this petite returning athlete. A native of Sarnia, Gilverson had earned her Masters degree and was teaching physical education and politics in sports at the University of Alberta when she gave it up to follow a spiritual guide to India. Twenty years later, she's back, is a spiritual therapist and picking up medals in her old sport of canoeing, despite years without any practice. Living with her sister in Acton while she re-establishes her life in the "outside" world, Gilverson turned to canoeing to "ground herself." Anyone doing a lot of work with spirituality will find they're out of their Continued on page 2 Increase in Town taxes set at 6.3% BY MAGGIE PETRUSHEVSKY The New Tanner A skateboard park for Acton and a new fire hall in the south end of George- town are the major facilities proposed to be added to the Town of Halton Hills next year, according to the first draft of the town's 2006 budget. Presented to council at a special meeting Aug. 8, the budget proposes a total increase of 6.3 per cent, or $53 on a house assessed at $250,000. Two per cent of that increase is dedicated to the town's pavement man- agement program. Regional council already approved a 3.3 per cent in- crease for its proposed budget at its July meeting. That will add an additional $26 to the bill on that same house as- sessed at $250,000. Both of these budgets can change, of course, over the coming months as staff work on figures and projects for their individual depart- ments.
