Last year, Rockwood's run raised $5,500 bringing the 20-year total to more than $50,000. To commemorate this anniversary, organizer Steve Thompson is looking for past Terry Fox Run merchandise to display at the start and finish lines. Contact Steve at rockwoodtfr@sympatico.ca to donate or help out in any way. The organizing committee is based at Stone United Church, the sponsor. The Run will take place from 12noon to 2pm. Participants and supporters will meet at Rockwood Centennial School at Mary St. Come out and enjoy a fun filled day for the whole family, while raising money and awareness to fight cancer. The run is non-competitive and you can run, walk or roll (bikes, wheelchairs, roller blades, strollers) the one to ten kilometre distance. There is no fee charged but donations are requested or you can collect money. No pre-registration is required. You just show up and complete an entry form on Run day. For more information, visit www.terryfoxrunrockwood.freeservers.com or www.stoneunitedchurch.ca. Bake Sale Plus There will be a bake sale plus lots of other goodies at St. John's Anglican Church Hall on Saturday, August 27 from 9am to Ipm. Proceeds go to the Rockwood Youth Drop in Centre. Playground Improvement Committee busy According to Deb Drake, the Rockwood Centennial Play- ground Improvement Committee has been busy over the summer. Donation boxes have been placed in many local busi- nesses. Look for them and give generously, even if it is small change. Organizers have also been working on their "Shop Rockwood" campaign. Businesses can purchase advertise- ment in flyers, which students and volunteers will distribute to friends and family, encouraging people to "support businesses who support our children." They have also been approaching businesses regarding grants, which has been labour intensive and has not yet yielded positive results. Last June, there was a coin drive at the school which raised $900. The student council raised a further $500. The current total raised is over $21,000 almost half way to reaching their goal of $50,000. The first business to have their name on the playground plaque is Cantario Marketing Inc. for donating $2,500. Other sup- porters were Wellington Trailer Sales, Golden Woods Riding, Rockwood True Value Hardware, Swanston Farm Equipment, and Rockwood Pharmacy. As a first improvement to the playground, there will be games painted on the asphalt this fall as soon as it is repaired. The installation of portable classrooms has torn up some as- phalt and delayed the game painting. When the $50,000 goal is reached, play structures will be installed to replace the ones that the government removed. For information on donating or volunteering, contact Rockwood Centennial School or the Upper Grand District School Board. : ll : CHUN YI: ASMASHING SUCCESS: Rockwood producer, John Cripton, (back row, second from right) was on the mark in producing the North American performances of Beijing's Chun Yi: The Legend of Kung Fu.
