Name new Director of Education The Halton Board of Education was expected to ratify the contract for its new director of education at a special meeting last night. Halton Hills trustee Ethel Gardiner said the board has gone through asearch process and selected an "experienced director" to replace former director Dusty Papke who left in May. She would not release the individual's name until after the board ratified a contract for the person Wednesday. "T can't tell you who it is," Gardiner said Tuesday, "but we were able to at- tract good candidates and chose one." Gardiner explained the delay in an- nouncing the hiring resulted from a request by Education Minister Gerard Kennedy that he be allowed to review the contract before it was signed. The fact Kennedy has reviewed and approved the contract suggests that it meets with the new provincial standards, she said, even though those standards have not yet been released. 17-year-old son suffers first degree burns when gas can explodes BY MAGGIE PETRUSHEVSKY The New Tanner A Dublin Line family has turned to the community for help to find shelter after a fire Saturday night destroyed their possessions and injured their eldest son. Diana Anderson said at present she and her five chil- dren, aged 7 to.17,are staying. in her father's basement on Hillcrest Street , but that can't continue, "We can't stay there," she says. "We're all crammed into one bedroom." She would like to find some place nearby so her children can resume classes in their familiar schools in September. Anderson was absent at the time her son Anthony, 17, discovered fire in the garage of the house near Turtle Lake at 9:55 p.m. "Our washer was broken so I'd come to town to do laundry," she says. Anthony saw a light under the garage door and opened it to see what was going on, his mother explained. When he saw the flames, he reached for the hose to put them out, but in'his haste, he upset a can with gas for the lawn mower. It exploded causing first degree burns to his face and arms. He was taken to Georgetown hospital for treatment. His sister Jamie Anderson, 14, heard the explosion and went outside to investigate. Hearing her brother talking to her mother and seeing the fire, she called 911on her cell phone, then ran back into the house to get her younger brother and sisters outside. Anderson says she arrived home ahead of police and firefighters and not being able to see her children because of the smoke, went inside. Finding they were out, she managed to rescue one of the family's dogs but police prevented her going back for other pets. Firefighters brought out and revived the cat and the second dog, but smoke killed their bird. Anderson and her family have lived in the brick bunga- low for seven years and in the Acton area for 17 years. They had just finished building bedrooms in their basement to give the children separate rooms Anderson says, and the kids furniture was in the garage pending placement in the new rooms. A mother on disability, she had just purchased school clothes for the four younger children and the clothes as well as four new bicycles were all lost because the contents of the garage were completely destroyed. The ceiling in the livin- groom has also collapsed, destroying even more of their possessions. "Even the beds reek of smoke," she said. Anderson says she has no insurance.
