THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2005 THE NEW TANNER Bantam Tanners bounce Erin By Chuck Tysoe Acton BB Bantam Tanners constructed a 5-2 second-pe- riod lead but needed a further two third period scares to hold off Erin's third-period rally, prevailing 7-5 over the Devils at the Erin Communi- ty Centre. Last Friday night's exhibition tilt was the first game action for the Tanners, who had been skated hard by coaches Vince Grogam, Mark Mckeon and Mike NcNabb over three weeks of tryouts and practices. The hard work paid off, as the Tanners kept up a quick- skating pace throughout the game, in good measure containing the Erin boys. At times Acton produced avery pleasing flow with quick outlets, counterattacks and many good chances off the rush, Better shooting and a little patience could easily have produced a half-dozen more. Defensively the Tanners struggled in spots with ex- tended fore-checking from Erin, which produced most of the home sides chances and goals. Despite the five goals, Dirk van Soclen's strong effect was vital in making his team's seven tallies count. This year's Tanners are a mix of returnees from last season's Tri-County Cham- pion AE Bantams (coached by the same staff), Bantam BB's notably top Defence- man Jack Matthews and new comers from the AHHA ranks. Bradley Kri scored four times for the visitors, and for his efforts earned a two game suspension after a third pe-. riod incident. Competing for the puck Kri and an opponent both appeared to lose their balance. Falling backwords, . Kri's arms and stick came up in a glancing blow on the falling Erin player's helmet. A tough break for the young man who is no McSorley. At the same time, the officials, who were very consistent, had no choice. Hockey par- ents should be pleased to see the OMHA taking a strong stand on head blows, some- thing minor hockey has been frighteningly casual about for too long. Acton's speed and dili- gence in competing for the puck everywhere, led to Erin taking a number of penalties in their third period frustra- tion, contributing to their loss. Tanner's regular season opened Tuesday night at Fergus. Complete roster and scoring information for these games was not available at press time.
