THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2005 THE NEW TANNER CONTINUING THE MARATHON: Wearing a 25th anniversary Terry Fox Run T-shirt, McKenzie-Smith Bennett School student Courtney Johnson (second from right) took part in her school's Fox Run on Friday, along with Amanda Kurpieweit, Sarah Leitch and Tyara Woodrich. -- Frances Niblock photo Acton schools raise dollars to swell Terry Fox fund By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Students at three Acton schools raised approxi- mately $2,300 for cancer research in Terry Fox Runs recently, keeping Fox's Marathon of Hope alive, 25 years after Fox ran through Acton. That will be added to the $27,5000 pledged during the Acton community Fox Run two weeks ago. Acton Fox Run organizer, Councillor Jon Hurst, who attended runs at Robert Little School and Acton High School, but couldn't make the rain-delayed event at McKenzie-Smith Bennett School on Friday, said Acton -- young and old -- continues to be very generous. "Our smaller community relates to each other with the concerns we have for charities of all kinds, and the Terry Fox Run is one event that our community has supported for 25 years -- I'm proud to be able to say that we've been there, right from day one and will continue on," Hurst said. Because of the rain on the scheduled Fox Run day at Acton High, students were given the option of doing their laps in the hallway, and Hurst said he was moved to see that over 200 students did their laps on the track as planned. "One of the kids said to me that Terry Fox did it in the rain and they were going to do it too -- that was really gratifying." The Acton High Fox Run raised approximately $900. Approximately 350 stu- dents in Grades One through Five, and staff at Robert Little School raised $400 in pledges during their run last Monday -- aiming to raise $1 per student as Fox hoped to raise $1 per Canadian. At the run on Friday at MSB that raised approxi- mately $1,000, instructional » assistant Lynda Bowen told the students that Fox is her hero, and recounted seeing him run through town in July 1980. "One year before Terry began his run I had been diagnosed with cancer and it (Terry's run) was an en- couragement for me to keep fighting. | am blessed, as I have had cancer twice and am known as a survi- vor," Bowen said, asking the students to continue the Marathon of Hope that Terry didn't get to finish.
