14 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2005 Familiar voice missing at cenotaph One strong voice was miss- ing in Remembrance Day ceremonies at the cenotaph in Acton Saturday morning as Acton honoured its war dead. Frank. Spielvogel, the veteran dressed smartly in Legion beret and blazer, who read the names of those who died in three wars in bold tones for several years has joined the ranks of those who served in uniform and have passed on. An Acton native, Frank died in Fergus on the way from his Mount Forest home's hospital to Guelph, on Octo- ber | after a short illness. He was 71 years of age. Frank Spielvogel served in the Royal Canadian Dra- goons for six years, several of them in Germany, "stopping Communist aggression" as he was fond of saying. His years in the army were always a source of pride and bearing. He was a proud member of the Acton branch of the Royal Canadian Legion where he served as Poppy. chairman, as well as several other posts in the executive. Frank's crisp salute and Frank Spielvogel military bearing were always front and centre when he read the names of the fallen at the ..cenotaph 'on Remembrance Day. But Frank also had another side, which included love for his wife of 52 years was taking a young boy for a walk through the streets of Acton. Frank acknowledged each person they passed with a simple, "Good morning Sir." It was a small gesture but it meant a lot to him. As he explained to the boy who later became Debbie's husband, "It doesn't cost anything to make someone feel like a million bucks." Debbie recalled that Frank was proud of his time in the army although he joined somewhat reluctantly. Af- ter a series of mischievous adventures, his father gave him an ultimatum ~jail or the army. He chose the army. "I can't think of a better person to have on your side," she said. "When Frank returned from the army he became an active member of the Acton Legion. 'What he liked most was distributing poppies for Remembrance Day. With each poppy pinned on a lapel, or name he read at the cenotaph, he honoured them and their families," Debbie eulogized. Frank's civilian years in- cluded time as a school bus and truck driver, as well as 25 years in the Acton quarry, from where he retired.
