The latest "Echoes," the IODE magazine, outlines the history of IODE in Ontario. The first chapters were formed in 1900. Our Lakeside Chapter was formed in April 1918. The primary focus during those-early years was to provide clothing and amenities to soldiers and-veterans. The next 20 years saw financial support and member sui towards establishing hospitals as well as sanatoria with tuberculosis. The war years brought out nimble fingers of the women who knitted, sewed and rolled bandages for our soldiers. The monies they raised contributed significantly to the purchase of aircraft, naval vessels, and ambulances. The post-war pe- riod turned to education and citizenship programs focused on intergrating immigrants into Canadian society. As theaeeds of society changed, new programs were de- veloped such as: funding for genetic counselling; funding a research project examining folic acid related. to pregnancy; partnering with various groups to provide summer camps for under privileged children, deaf and learning disabled children, and children with cancer and their families; support for schools in Northern Ontario and Labrador. Today, IODE continues to respond not only to local needs but world wide needs such as IODE Canadian Disaster Fund -- Tsunami Relief. Our next meeting will be December 6.
