THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2005 THE NEW TANNER By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner In 39 days, the 94,723 eligible voters in the Halton electoral district will go to the polls and elect one of four registered candidates, including incumbent Lib- eral Gary Carr. He faces three challengers including former Halton Peel MP Garth Turner, New Democratic Party candidate Anwar Naqvi and Green Party candidate Dr. Kyle Grice. In the June 28, 2004 Fed- eral election, Carr garnered 48 per cent of the vote. His nearest challenger was Conservative Dean Martin who took 38 per cent of the vote in a riding comprised of the northerly sections of Burlington, Oakville and Milton. Carr, a former profession- al hockey player with the Quebec Nordiques, worked in marketing before being elected to the Provincial legislature for the riding of Oakville South in 1990, and again in 1995 and 1999. He also served as Speaker of the Legislature. Carr was elected MP in June 2004, and serves as a member of the special caucus committee on im- migration and the standing, committee on public ac- counts. He is married with three children. Author, broadcaster, speaker, financial guru and entrepreneur Garth Turner is attempting a return to public office -- he served as MP for Halton-Peel from 1988 to 1993, and was Min- ister of National Revenue. He also mounted a run for leadership of the Progres- sive Conservative Party. Turner founded Millen- nium Media Television, an independent TV produc- tion company, and owns the Credit River Company, which recently bought the Belfountain General Store and Cataract Inn. The Halton NDP candi- date is Anwar Naqvi, an author, lawyer and human rights activist who came to Canada after being jailed in Pakistan for speaking out against the dictatorship regimes in his native India. He is a lawyer who spe- cializes in tax and corporate law and lives in Oakville. He has three grown children and grandchildren, and has run provincially and feder- ally as a NDP candidate in Oakville and Halton. Mr. Finnie dropped into The New Tanner offices Mon- day to note he is busy on the campaign trail. He was also at the McKenzie-Smith Bennett public school on Monday with the other candidates to answer questions from students. Finnie is the "part-time" mayor of Erin and is offering his years of experience both as a businessman and a local politician to voters. A land sur- veyor with his own company he was elected deputy mayor of Erin in 1997, elected mayor in 2000 and acclaimed mayor in 2003. He has a two-month hiatus from Erin council until the election is over. As mayor of Erin he also sat on Wellington County Coun- cil where he was chairman of the Administration, Finance and Personnel committee which managed to lower the tax increase to 4% this year. He also served on the Family Rob Finnie and Children's Services in Guelph, on the board of St. Joseph's Hospital and spent two years as chair of the East Wellington Advisory Group (EWAG). Finnie notes his experience which includes running his own business, having to meet a payroll and keep costs down as a valuable asset. He points to the transfor- mation of downtown Erin's business section making judi- cious use of small amounts of money to impact the overall view of the downtown.
