Take time to worship at one of Halton Hills' Churches or Temples Acton/Georgetown - Friday, August 2, 2002 Page 9 Out of all the lists that seem to take over the lives of a bride and groom before their wedding, one that often gets overlooked until the last minute is the "set list." That's music jargon for what songs are going to be played, in what sequence and at what special moment. While you can leave it up to the hired DJ or band to play what they do at every wedding, it's much more fun to choose and personalize your list. If you're having a reception of more than 30 guests, it's likely that you are going to have to satisfy any number of musical tastes. There's nothing worse than watching poor Aunt Edith and Uncle Milt cover their ears while you and your new spouse hit the floor to your favorite REM tune. Especially if Edith and Milt drove 600 miles toting a pretty fabulous gift for their favorite niece and her new husband. While it's true that you can't please 'em all, you can mix the music up enough to give everybody lots of what they'll enjoy and lots that will get them to "give it up" on the dance floor. Here are some suggestions, many tried and true and some a bit more experimental. The first dance, however, belongs solely to you and your new mate. But as important as "your" song may be to the two of you, remember: This dance is likely to be on videotape, likely to be watched by your future children and grandchildren. Therefore, it's wise to choose something classy rather than a tune more appropriate for a mosh pit. For pure sentimentality, you can't beat the Diana Ross/Lionel Ritchie duet of Endless Love. Another one guaranteed to get their eyes moist again, is Eric Clapton's You Look W o n d e r f u l Tonight. Also effective are Van Morrison's Have I Told You Lately, Elton John's Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and Elvis' classic, C a n ' t H e l p Falling In Love. After your first dance, it's time for father/daughter and mother/son dances. It would be a sweet gesture to allow your parents to pick their own favorite, although you may want to give them some suggestions. Recently, Bob Carlisle's Butterfly Kisses has been getting a lot of air time at receptions. For moms and sons, Bette Midler's Wind Beneath My Wings has proven popular, but you may want to go with something a little more off-beat. Try Ben E. King's Stand By Me, or perhaps You've Got A Friend by James Taylor. Planning on doing a dollar dance for the bride? The Beatles' Money is certainly appropriate, as is the old Tommy James song, Mony, Mony. To paraphrase an old song, some guests are a little bit country, some a little bit rock 'n' roll. So when it comes time for the whole party to start dancing, your DJ should mix it up as much as possible. A good rule is to play four modern pop dance songs, then throw in a country tune or two, followed by a slower dance song. This allows for everybody, kids to seniors, to enjoy a spin on the dance floor. Of course, some wedding party songs have almost become a tradition. It's hard to imagine a reception where The Chicken Dance or YMCA isn't played, as there are dance steps to each that are easy to follow. The Macarena, and Billy Ray Cyrus' Achey Breaky Heart are others that everybody either knows or can pick up the steps to quickly. For some sure dance pleasers, have the DJ spin Celebration by Kool and the Gang, We Are Family by Sister Sledge, and the B- 52's Love Shack. Throw in Shout by the Dynetoons, and Little Eva's Locomotion, and the floor is sure to be packed. By Daniel Aspell, Multi-Ad Services, Inc. Find music that strikes the right note Get them out of their chairs with irresistible dance songs There's nothing worse than watching poor Aunt Edith and Uncle Milt cover their ears while you and your new spouse hit the floor to your favourite REM tune.
