Katie Robinson, 5, found the splash pad at Georgetown South Community Park was a sure-fire way to beat the heat Wednesday as dozens of little ones ran through the streams of water. Forecasts indicate the heat will be with us over the holiday weekend, so local town pools and the splash pad will be the place to be to keep cool. Photo by Ted Brown Five Halton Hills organizations are among several in Halton and Peel to share in nearly $1.5 million in grants announced by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Receiving money locally in this round of grants are Acton Seniors Recreation Centre, Halton Hills Community Support and Information (HHCSI), Lions Club of Georgetown, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 120 Georgetown, and St. John Ambulance in Halton Hills. Acton Seniors Recreation Centre will receive $37,700 to make renovations to the building and purchase equipment that will enable area seniors to make fuller use of the recreation centre. Gerald Rennie, who chaired the centre's committee for the Trillium grant proposal, said they were pleased to hear about the grant which will be used to build a curtain wall to separate the lounge from the main part of the seniors' centre and to replace several items, such as tables, that are worn out. "We think it's going to enhance the centre," said Rennie. HHCSI will receive $160,000 over three years to provide youth development programs through the Off the Wall Youth Centre in Acton and Open Door in Georgetown and Lions Club of Georgetown will get $14,200 to purchase musical equipment for the Georgetown Pipe Band which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The Royal Canadian Legion will receive $75,000 to increase access to its facility by renovating washrooms and installing an elevator. Bob McNeilly, chairman of the legion branch's Trillium grant committee, said they were delighted to hear about the grant. "That's the amount we asked for and that's what we got," said McNeilly. He said the work they plan to do, particularly the elevator, is needed "because we have a lot of members who are not able to climb the stairs." St. John Ambulance is to get $39,000 to buy a used Mobile First Aid unit to provide first aid services at public events and in emergency situations in north Halton. The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, receives $100 million in government funding generated through the Ontario's charity casinos. --By Lisa Tallyn, staff writer Editorial..........................6 A Ted Bit.........................7 Sports....................13, 14 Entertainment..............16 Classifieds..............20-22 INSIDE What's Cookin' ...pg. 15 Five local organizations to receive Trillium cash
