High school roundup Senior Bearcats win volleyball tourney For the second weekend in a row, the Acton senior Bearcats captured the championship of a girls' volleyball tournament involving top-flight GTA schools, this time at Newtonbrook in North York. The Bearcats won all but one of 10 games in the preliminary round, putting them up against William Lyon Mackenzie in the semi-finals, where they pulled off a 25-12, 32-30 victory. Superior serving and defending by Acton resulted in a 25-22, 25-19 triumph in the championship against Etobicoke's Richview. Acton's senior girls improved to 7-0 in league play this season with a 25-19, 25-17 win over E.C. Drury on Monday. Basketball The junior and senior boys' Georgetown Rebels' teams took a trip to Mishawaka, Indiana for a couple of exhibition games last weekend and got a rousing introduction to Hoosier high school hoops. Playing in front of about 1,200 hometown supporters, the Rebels, who sported a 19-5 victory head- ing into the contest, kept the score to within eight points until the third quarter before the hosts took control and went on to win 76-38. Georgetown's juniors lost 53-8. Georgetown also played teams from Buchanan, Michigan on the trip. The senior Rebels were edged 49-47, while the juniors lost 47-44. Elsewhere, big centre Adam Grove led all scorers with 18 points as the Acton Bearcats downed E.C. Drury of Milton 4840 on Monday in a senior boys' matchup. Georgetown's seniors clipped Milton District 53-52. Steve Ples Emma Jolly Simon Deering Athletes of the Week Acton High School Athletes of the Week are Adam Grove and Emma Jolly. Grove, a Grade 11, 6-foot-10 centre for the senior Bearcats_ basketball squad, had 38 points over three games at a recent tournament in North Bay and was a standout defensively for Acton. Jolly is a Grade 9 student at Acton who has shone in the middle position for the junior girls_ volleyball team. Christ The King Athletes of the Week are Steve Ples and Rebeka Hickman. Ples is a power forward but has been a force at both ends of the court for the senior Jaguars_ hoops side, while Hickman, Grade 12 student, has been a key offensive contributor for CTK_s senior girls_ volleyball team, playing the power hitter spot. Georgetown District High School Athletes of the Week are Simon Deering and Katie Banks. Deering, a centreman, notched a goal and an assist in a 4-2 Rebel victory over Aldershot last week. Dominating opponents with her powerful serve and clever setting, Banks has captained the junior girls_ volleyball team to an undefeated regular season and a big victory at the Saltfleet tourney, where she served for 15 points in a row.
