Inkwell Montessori preschoolers send 160 literacy kits to Ethiopia espite the fact that some of the students at Inkwell Montessori Preschool & Art Camp are too young to read, they were more than happy to assemble literacy kits so students in Ethiopia might someday learn to. On Valentine's Day, students at Inkwell Montessori Preschool & Art Camp in Glen Williams joined thousands of students across Canada in assembling literacy kits for students in Ethiopia. Inkwell students raised enough money to send 160 kits overseas. The kits included books, rulers, pencils and other school materials. The project is sponsored by a charitable organization called CODE, which has been supporting children's literacy for over 40 years. CODE's Project Love is a national program encouraging Canadian students, through their schools, to learn about the educational challenges faced by their peers in Third World countries. The project has helped hundreds of thousands of less fortunate students in Africa and throughout the Caribbean since its inception in 1987. It is partially sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). "This is a perfect fit for us," explains Inkwell administrator Lynne Fitzgerald. "Despite the fact that we're a preschool and we have students as young as two-and-ahalf, we believe that it's never too early to introduce the idea of helping others. It also presents a great opportunity for the children to learn about the country in which Inkwell Montessori students, from left, Emily Jenkins, Quentin Lema and Abby Girouard assemble some of the literacy kits which the school mailed out to Ethiopian students on Valentine's Day. the kits will be distributed and to begin to develop a sense of global responsibility. We're now very familiar with Ethiopia. "We'd like to make sure we do at least one of these projects a year. It benefits kids who need it, teaches our children an important life lesson and we feel terrific too. I hate to use the cliché win/win, but it really is." Inkwell Montessori Preschool & Art Camp is an accredited applicant member of the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (CCMA), www.inkwellmontessori.com.
