CLNH event: Bike-a-Thon changed to Walk-a-Thon Supports programs that don't receive government funding Participants in Community Living North Halton's 16th annual fundraising event next month won't be on bicycles this year, but they will be still raising much needed funding for some of the agency's programs. The annual Community Living North Halton (CLNH) Bike-a-Thon has been replaced this year with a Walk-a-Thon to be held Sunday, May 7 at the Gellert Community Centre Park in Georgetown South. Nancy MacNeill, chair of the event, said they decided to go with a walk-a-thon because it is more practical and cost-effective. "The goal is to raise as much money as possible and have as much fun as possible," said MacNeill. She said they are hoping people of all ages will participate in the walk-a-thon and expects some participants will be in wheelchairs or using walkers. "It's not about the distance. It's not a race," said MacNeill. The walk-a-thon will be held on the approximate 2.5 km path in the Georgetown South park to raise money for CLNH's programs that do not receive any government funding-- Saturday Centre, Friday Friends and the Drop-In Centre. Saturday Centre is located in both Milton and Georgetown and is for school-aged children who have developmental disabilities. The program provides recreation for the children and respite for their families. Friday Friends is a social club held on Friday nights for young adults with developmental disabilities. The Drop-In Centre is located in Milton. Registration for the walk-athon will be begin at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the morning. The official opening ceremony, conducted by Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette and Mark Curtis, will be held at 8:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to participants who reach different sponsorship levels. MacNeill said those who raise $20 or more will receive a CLNH t-shirt, $100-- a pocket radio with earbuds, $200 -- a talking pedometer with calorie counter and personal alarm, $400-- a Motorola Walkie-Talkie set, and $500-- an IPOD. The walk-a-thon will wrap up at noon and will be followed by a large silent auction and raffle. Items included in the silent auction include a load of sand and gravel, restaurant gift certificates, Toronto Maple Leaf autographed plaque, a pass for two to Canada's Wonderland, and membership to Curves for a year. Sponsor sheets for the walk-athon are available at various locations in town including Young's Pharmacy. For more information contact MacNeill at 905-878-3269 or at nmacneill@cogeco.ca.
