16 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 24, 2006 SPORTS & LEISURE Good week for Dube and 'Dogs EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer With his #18 jersey now officially retired and a banner raised in his honour at Georgetown's Mold-Masters SportsPlex, Halton Hills Bulldogs' all-time leading scorer Mike Dube reflected on his five excellent seasons with the Jr. B lacrosse club. "It really means a lot to be up on a banner in an arena that I cherished playing in so much, and it's really a second home to me," said the 22-yearold Campbellville resident. Dube scored 175 goals and had 316 points in 101 career games with the Bulldogs and was recognized for his contributions in a ceremony prior to the Halton Hills-Mimico Mountaineers' contest on Thursday night. Drafted in the first round by the OLA Major Brampton Excelsiors in February, Dube was then dealt to the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks and scored a goal in his debut on Saturday evening, a 10-9 loss to Six Nations. A product of the Halton Hills minor lacrosse system, Dube is now coaching the Bulldogs' peewee #2 team and said he is indebted to an organization that has become a hotbed for the sport in Ontario. His 19-year-old brother, Alex, also plays for the Bulldogs. "You see guys who are in their third year (with the Jr. B squad) who are really stepping up and becoming really good players," the Sheridan College business student added. "Nic Grasby was our ball boy in my first year here and now he's one of the top scorers on the team. To see things like that and how the organization is growing is phenomenal. I was fortunate enough to play in a Founders' Cup for Halton Hills that was probably the best-run in the last 20 years." While Dube was coaching his peewees last Thursday night on one side of the SportsPlex, the Jr. B 'Dogs pulled off their biggest win of the season so far, needing extra time to beat the Mountaineers 11-9. Cameron Flint scored four times and assisted on another for his second consecutive five-point performance, while Braden Artem struck for a hat-trick, including a pair of goals in overtime. Brandon Goodfellow, Greg Henry, Nole Coutrouzas and captain Travis Bland rounded out Alex Dube (32) of the Halton Hills Bulldogs chases down Mimico Mountaineers' forward Mike Macrory (21) during their OLA Jr. B matchup on Thursday night. Then on Friday night, Halton Hills had little trouble defeating the host Milton Mavericks 10-2. Henry notched his first hat-trick with the team and game MVP Bland added five points to the winning effort. Rookie Michael Cregan earned the win in goal for the visitors. Coming up this week, the 6-3 Bulldogs have a return match with the Mountaineers in Mimico Friday night, then play host to the 8-0 Barrie Tornado on Sunday beginning at 6 p.m. when Adam Holton's jersey #27 will be retired. The 17-year-old Putnam struggled to an 86 on Sunday in the final round of the 36-hole event, battling wind, rain, cool temperatures and even hail, which ballooned the scores of his opponents as well. "The weather was brutal out there," said Putnam, who edged out Chris McGrath of Whitby by two strokes. "I figured the scores would be pretty high so I tried to stay focused." Andrew Albrecht of Georgetown, playing in the boys' 14-16 age group, recorded rounds of 82 and 88 to finish in a tie for eighth place. Luke Ovenden was tied for 12th and Adam Salisbury placed 21st. Twelve-year-old Adam Putnam carded rounds of 93 and 94 to place eighth. The CJGA Ontario schedule continues this weekend with the opening Nike Golf Junior Series tournament at Forest City National Golf Club in London.
