26 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 26, 2006 Shortage of space at centre forces juggling of schedules JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre The Wednesday morning art class is taking a break for the summer and will resume in the fall. I will update people on that later. We are running out of space at our centre and so will be running more things in the evenings. There will be scrapbooking every second Thursday of the month from 7-9 p.m. and paper tole will move from Monday afternoons to every first, third and fourth Thursday of the month from 7-9 p.m. The classes are for members only as space is limited. Anyone who is 55 or older is welcome to join the Acton Seniors Centre. The new membership chairperson, Margaret Dodgson, tells me there will be a new members tea on Monday, June 19, 2-4 p.m. Members who have joined recently should receive a phone call inviting them. Come out and meet fellow new members, plus your board members and find out what the centre has to offer you. Thinking of membership, some people don't realize that your renewal isn't due on the anniversary of when you joined but by Dec. 31 annually. People are asking what we are using the money for raised by the tomorrow's (Saturday's) walk-a-thon. You may have noticed that the sign at the entrance to the Seniors Centre has been taken down as it was in poor condition. It should shortly be replaced by a much more attractive sign that will stay looking beautiful for a long time. We are also in need of equipment at the centre and hopefully it will raise enough to cover the expenses of all these projects. As the years pass we find things wear out and have to be replaced, a little like our bodies as we reach the golden years. The centre fundraising events coming up this weekend are the walk-a-thon and the community brunch. Tomorrow, a walk-a-thon in Prospect Park will start with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. M&M Meat Shops have kindly offered to staff and operate a barbecue in the park and any participant who has more than $10 pledged will receive a ticket for a hamburger or hot dog, plus drink. Canada Trust has kindly donated t-shirts to the first 20 participants.
