Smoke Free Ontario The new Smoke Free Ontario Act comes into effect on May 31, 2006 and will bring with it some changes at the three Halton Healthcare hospitals to ensure we are in compliance with the legislation. This new Act does not allow smoking under overhangs on buildings, or in enclosed public spaces including structures such as parking garages, it also legislates the removal of all covered smoking shelters. New signage has been posted in and around our hospitals to help identify where smoking is not permitted. Nurses: Our Growth is Your Opportunity Halton Healthcare is currently recruiting for Registered Nurses in Obstetrics, ER, Medicine, Surgery, ICU, Obstetrics, Renal Dialysis and Mental Health for our hospital sites Georgetown Hospital, Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, and Milton District Hospital. Like all HHS staff, our Nurses are supported by innovative initiatives such as the Kailo Wellness Program, worklife enhancement programs, including on-site fitness facilities, an individualized preceptor-supported, competency-based orientation program for new staff, as well as financial support for continuing education including the Canadian Nurses Association Credentialling for specific practice areas. Through funding from the Nursing Secretariat, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, we have hired 56 new graduates in the past two years, and the Ministry's Late Career Initiative has provided funding for 40 nurses to utilize their vast experience to support special nursing projects at HHS. Along with a highly supportive professional workplace, we are proud to offer our staff, a warm, friendly environment within our three community hospitals. Our Nurses have the opportunity to live and work in their own thriving community allowing more time to spend with family and friends, and less time commuting. Take this opportunity to work in your community. Apply on-line at www.haltonhealthcare.com New Board Appointments Murray Paton, Chair, Halton Healthcare Services is pleased to announce the appointment of Rick Johnson, Tom Simmons, Councillor Jon Hurst and Dr. Craig Carson to the HHS Board of Directors. The addition of these Halton Hills representatives completes the governance transition following the transfer of Georgetown Hospital to Halton Healthcare in January 2006. "Our Board members represent a wide spectrum of professional and personal skills and interest and are able to bring the communities' perspective to the Board," said Mr. Paton. "During the transfer process, the Governance Committee recommended that the Board composition be adjusted to include two members of the Halton Hills community, a member of the Halton Hills Town Council and medical representation from the Georgetown Hospital medical staff." During the interim time period between January and May, Halton Hills was represented on the Board by Georgetown residents Gillian Tuck Kutarna and Paul Armstrong, both of whom played key roles in the transfer process. "Our thanks to Gillian and Paul for so capably representing Halton Hills while we completed our formal search process," said Mr. Paton. "With their experience and insight we felt that Halton Hills was well represented and this allowed our Board to complete a very thorough search. The Board also had the privilege of working with Mayor Rick Bonnette who provided considerable guidance and was an active participant throughout the search process." "We were fortunate to have received applications and expressions of interest from a number of very qualified residents of Halton Hills," continued Mr. Paton. "On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to thank everyone for the interest they have expressed in serving their community hospital. We welcome our new members and look forward to their participation at the Board table."
