4 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 31, 2006 Majority of events set for Sunday Riverfest makes its return to Norval this weekend LISA TALLYN Staff Writer After a year's hiatus, Riverfest is back. The festival is set for Saturday and Sunday (June 3 and 4) at Willow Park Ecology Centre and Norval Parkin Norval. Its motto is Ecology-Music-Art-Our Environment. "It should be a lot of fun," said Riverfest organizer Carolyn Martin. "It's like an oldtime festival." She said during the past year many people would stop and ask her when Riverfest would be revived. With the hard work of many volunteers and financial contributions of many people, groups and businesses, the popular festival is back. Saturday is set aside for hiking, Project Wet, Historic Norval guided walks and Young Hikers Program, but most of the festival's activities and events will be held Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Activities will include the Children's Water Festival programs such as Enviroscape Wetlands, We Use That Much, and Off I Go, and exhibits such as Wye Marsh's Wet & Scaly, River Critters, Electrofishing and many others. The popular Paddle to the Sea race will also be held Sunday. Other stations will include kite building, rock and scarf painting and treasure hunts. There will also be a bouncy castle, rock climbing and other active pastimes for kids. The Riverfest Outdoor Market will feature vendors and community groups offering products and services related to water, environmentally friendly practices and sustainable living. There will also be a pancake breakfast hosted by the Rotarians, lunch, dinner and snack foods provided by Fancy This and Sammy's Ice Cream, and a beer/wine tent. Featured artists at the festival will be Williams Mill Stone Sculptors, William Band, Innerscapes (a co-operative of six local artists) Metalscape, Lynne Ellis, Barbara Ariss, Halton Woodcarvers and many others. Performing throughout Sunday will be James Gordon, Nonie Crete, international children's recording artists Shari and Jerry Tallon, children's musician Chris McKhool, Bruce Madole, Michael Kelly, Washboard Hank, Stewed Roots featuring Neva Tesolin and Jeff Hale who will perform a blend of folk, blues and old-time country with a pinch of Cajun spice, Neil and Sean Cotton, The No Name Band, JimBob and The Wild Thorndykes. There will also be a film festival featuring water-related films. Riverfest is a collaboration of many community groups including Willow Park Ecology Centre, Norval Community Association, Town Environmental Advisory Committee, Halton-North Peel Naturalists, Credit Valley Conservation, POWER, Bruce Trail Association, and Hike Ontario. The goal for Riverfest is to serve as a fundraiser for the school programs offered through Willow Park Ecology Centre. As a result the entrance fee will be $15 per family, $5 for adults and $3 for children six years and older. There will be a separate charge for the Project Wet Workshop.
