Idol mania in Acton The Acton BIA will once again be the hosts of Acton's Second Annual Acton Idol Contest, which begins on Canada Day. Idol auditions will be held at the pavilion at Prospect Park on Canada Day, Saturday, July 1. Five finalists will be picked by contest judges, and will then perform a song of their choice on the main stage at the Leathertown Festival, on Sunday, August 13, starting at 3:30 p.m. The Acton Idol Contest winner will be given the opportunity to perform on stage at the Leathertown Festival with chart-topping country singer Alysha Brooke. He or she will also win some cool prizes from downtown Acton merchants. The contest is open to anyone, aged 10 to 19 years of age. Contestants need not reside in Acton but must commit to both events should they be picked as a finalist. The first 20 to 25 applicants will be invited to audition at the Canada Day Concert in the Park at Prospect Park. Songwriters to perform at Canada Day in the Glen Tomorrow's stars are playing a free outdoor concert all afternoon on Canada Day at the Gazebo Main Stage. Sit on the grass and enjoy some of the best music around-- free of charge! The musicians playing are seasoned veterans of the Southern Ontario music scene offering a tremendous range of song styles and sensibilities. Keith Thompson, a singer-songwriter opens the show at approximately 1:30 p.m. He has performed with and opened for a wide range of bands and performers, showing his versatility as an entertainer. Thompson started his solo career in 1992 and has performed steadily ever since. His first CD was released in 2001. Marianne Girard has written hundreds of songs, including the Ceremonial Song for the United Nations Peace Conference in '92. By 18 she was playing guitar, and by 21 she was in Nashville, where her voyage as a writer began in earnest. She stayed for one year, then toured through North America and parts of Europe, at festivals and clubs. Other performers during the day will be Leslie Clendening, Lonnie Glass and Kent McMillan. Shakespeare play opens in outdoor theatre Brampton's new Flower City Theatre Festival opens with an interactive version of the Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing, directed by A.C.T. Productions Artistic Director Scott Lale. This hilarious tale of love, matchmaking and believing what you hear runs for three weeks, from June 23 to July 10, every Friday through Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Ken Whillans Square.
