Letters to the editor Family involved in bicycle-car accident thankful for help Dear editor, Recently my family had the unfortunate luck of being involved in an accident at the corner of Mountainview Road and Delrex Boulevard. My husband was riding his bike with our two little girls (ages 5 and 2) in a trailer behind the bike, when they were struck by a car while attempting to cross Mountainview. We, as a family, want to send out our most sincere thanks to everyone at the scene who aided us in all ways possible. Namely: The neighbours and bystanders who helped out right away by calling 911, calming our girls, supporting them and listening. (They went "over and above" by providing the girls with drinks and toys to keep them occupied.) The fireman from Richmond Hill who provided care to my husband immediately. The police officers and ambulance attendants who arrived quickly and dealt with the situation amazingly. The witnesses who gave of their time and provided impact statements. You are all the reason why we will get though this life-altering ordeal and the reason why we love living in Georgetown-- where people still care about other people. One last thing we would like to urge to you, the community, young, old or inbetween is to always wear your bike helmets-- this story would have had a tragic ending if my husband had not been wearing his! The Stephens family, Georgetown Especially, thank you all for coming. The winner of the door prize was E. Schmidt. Iona Lobb, Georgetown Hospital Volunteer Association Humane Society appreciates coverage Dear editor, The Fundraising Committee of the Upper Credit Humane Society would like to thank The Independent & Free Press for its ongoing support of the Society's work. Recently coverage was generously given promoting the UCHS Book Sale in Georgetown Market Place on June 3 and 4 and the "Essence of Summer" Silent Auction and Afternoon Tea held on June 11 at Stonecroft Inn, Erin. Both of these events combined raised in excess of $6,000 net for the Society and will greatly help us in our work with the animals. Public support for our fundraising events is crucial to our ongoing mission. We would like to take this opportunity Strawberry social a great success Dear editor, The Georgetown Hospital Volunteers held a very successful Strawberry Social on July 5. We would like to thank Bob Allison of Allison Farm Market and Pat and Peter McCarthy of Pine Haven Farm for their donation of strawberries. Thank you to Doug Welden and the Lions who allowed us the use of their Lions Hall and thank you to all the volunteers and their friends who worked at preparing the cakes and strawberries. to thank all the people who donated items for either of these events, who supported us by buying books or coming to the Silent Auction and Tea. Last but not least, kudos to the volunteers who worked tirelessly at both fundraisers, we could not do it without you. The Fundraising Committee and volunteers do not have a moment to relax as we gear up for the "Fore the Animals Golf Tournament" a joint venture with Orangeville Humane Society to be held at Caledon Country Club on Thursday, August 24 and The Amazing Dog Race-- a Walkathon and Pet Fair taking place at Cedarvale Park in Georgetown on September 10. Check our Web site www.uppercredit.com or call UCHS at 519-833-2287 or e.mail volunteer@uppercredit.com for more information on either of these events. Once again, those who cannot speak for themselves join us in a huge thank you to everyone. Judith-Anne Kolu, UCHS Fundraising Committee
