Acton motorcyclist seriously injured in Guelph St. crash A 47-year-old Acton motorcyclist remains in serious condition at Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital with leg injuries suffered in an accident Thursday evening in Georgetown. Charges have yet to be laid in connection with the collision, which took place at around 8:30 p.m. in the area of 320 Guelph Street, although the Halton Regional Police traffic bureau was still investigating as of press time Tuesday. Initial investigation has revealed that the westbound Harley-Davidson pulled into the centre turning lane, where it was struck by an eastbound Chrysler Neon that failed to yield to the motorcycle's position. The Neon struck the Harley on its left side, causing it to fishtail and eventually skid along the pavement. The 20-year-old Georgetown driver of the Neon was uninjured. The motorcyclist, whose name has not been released by police, was transported to Georgetown Hospital and later airlifted to Sunnybrook for treatment. Anyone with information related to this matter can call police at 905825-4777 or Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-TIPS (8477). Board, staff reach tentative deal A tentative settlement has been reached between the Halton District School Board and its Professional Student Services Personnel (PSSP) represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSSTF), Halton. Continuing negotiations culminated in an agreement reached last week. Details of the tentative, four-year deal between the professional staff and the school board are to remain confidential until ratification by both parties. The Halton District School Board approved the contract at special board meeting Wednesday night, while the PSSP bargaining unit will hold its ratification meeting today (Wednesday). "We are pleased to have come to a mutually-beneficial agreement with the PSSP group which will ultimately serve the needs of our system and our students," said Dawn Beckett-Morton, executive director of human resources for the Halton District School Board. PSSP President Willi Steinke, said, "We believe our membership will see this agreement as one that starts to address the issues of compensation and contracting out. Both issues had been identified by the membership as priorities for this round of negotiations. The Halton Professional Student Services Personnel employee group represents approximately 65 staff who work directly with students in the roles of psychological education consultants, speech language pathologists, social workers and child and youth counsellors. Buzzed for Ben Despite rainy, windy weather, the Buzz For Ben managed to raise $1,500 Saturday for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The brainchild of 10-year-old Noah MacDonald, (at left getting his hair cut by Mandy Dixon of Mandy's Hair Creation) the group hair-cutting event, which also included a barbecue, was staged outside the M&M Meat Shop in Acton to raise funds for MacDonald's cousin, Ben, who suffers from MD. Noah and brothers (above, from left) Aaron, 7, Jesse, 9, and twins Jonah and Elijah, 3, had their locks shorn and encouraged others to get clipped for $10 each. Photos by Shawn McAlpine Georgetown Fall Fair to celebrate 160th anniversary LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Organizers are hoping for a big turnout at the Georgetown Fall Fair set for this weekend (Sept. 8, 9 and 10). This year's fair-- the 160th edition--will feature a lot of the old favourite activities and events that have drawn area residents to the event year after year. "I think the fair has its own unique flavour," said Georgetown Agricultural Society president John Nurse. "For those who have never been before I think they will find it very interesting, and (offers) a great variety." Nurse said the Education Tent is open all weekend and allows people who don't have an agricultural background to learn more about farming. "It's going to be a better midway than ever," said Nurse, about one of the popular features of the fair. He said last year the midway was disappointing because the company that puts it on had transportation problems. "It should be back to its normal quality or better this year," said Nurse. The popular demolition derby should be good again this year said Nurse, because the fair's event is "one of the last good demolition derbies before their finals." The lineup for the weekend is: Gates open at Georgetown Fairgrounds Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Georgetown Fair Ambassador Competition will begin at 6 p.m. and the 4x4 Truck Pulls get under way at 7:30 p.m. Saturday starts at 8 a.m. with Kinsmen Girl's Softball followed by the English Horse Show and Halton 4-H Rabbit Club Achievement Show at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m. the Midway opens and The Archers of Caledon demonstration begins.
