Letter to the editor Remembrance is not a one-time event Dear editor, Stephen Garland wrote a wonderful letter regarding `Keep poppies year round', (Nov. 8 Indpendent & Free Press). I would like to clarify some points he made. The Poppy is the symbol of Remembrance that covers the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, Gulf War and Afghanistan. In Halton Hills, November 11 is only one of the events that remembrance is held for. In April of 2007, recognition will be given to the heroes of Vimy Ridge. I may point out that Doctor Claude Williams of Georgetown was one of the heroes of that battle, along with other names on our Cenotaph. In May, children from every school in Halton Hills (22) will place candles in tribute to those who served as well as those who died in the name of peace. In the evening, adults and families will also, in a Silent Walk, meet at our Cenotaph to pay tribute. In August, a Warriors' Day Parade will be held in Georgetown when colour parties from other Legions along with a Colour Guard from Plymouth Mass. join together. Every time a Legion colour party parades, or attends meetings, they wear the poppy. So you see Stephen, Remembrance is not a one-time event. I do like the idea of the poppy on the visor. I've always done that, and it would be nice if we all did it. Thank you for your letter, Bob McNeilly, Georgetown History lesson for students Robert McNeilly of Branch 120 of the Royal Canadian Legion spoke to the students at St. Francis of Assisi School Thursday morning about the battle of Vimy Ridge, 90 years ago. The Legion brought along a Colour Party as the students observed a service of Remembrance. Photo by Ted Brown ACTON-- ON ACTIVE SERVICE DURING WORLD WAR II CANADIAN ARMY OVERSEAS Pte.
