Photos by Sabrina Byrnes SALT committee protects Region's seniors Const. Chris Borak It is estimated that by the year 2026 Halton Region will have more than 130,000 residents who are over the age of 65. The majority of these residents will be living in their own home or with family. Although Halton Region is a safe place to live, some seniors are targets of thieves and con-artists. Seniors and Law Enforcement Together, or SALT, is a group of communityminded persons who take time from their lives to meet regularly with the Halton Regional Police Service to discuss current crime trends with regards to our senior community. The SALT committee acts as a communication link between the seniors' community and the police service. With regards to the elderly, SALT aims to reduce criminal victimization, enhance delivery of law enforcement services, improve quality of life, provide attention to fears and concerns, and much more. The SALT committee currently offers five free seminars to groups of 15 or more. Currently there are presentations on Frauds and Scams, Personal Safety, Home Security, Abuse of Power of Attorney, and the OPP Drive Wise program. The seminars can be offered in malls, clubs, churches, halls or community centers. They consist of a presentation including videos, pamphlets, brochures, and a question and answer period.
