Acton Seniors Centre to host Christmas bazaar tomorrow, and silent auction next week JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Don't forget to come and visit us on Saturday, Nov. 25 for our annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar. It starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. Everyone knows what a great tea we serve. You have to come early for the best selection of the delicious baking. There are lots of great prizes on the penny sale table and our crafty members have created some wonderful items, which might solve some of your Christmas gift giving. Our Christmas cakes will also be sold and if you are in the mood to make some soup we have a great combination package of beans ready to create a heart-warming soup for those cold rainy days (We have seen plenty of those this fall.) Donna has just told me that there will be the usual Tour of Lights. On Tuesday, Dec. 21 Ted Tyler has kindly donated buses again this year, and it is open to all Acton area seniors and handicapped people. There will be a wheelchair accessible bus provided, and of course, if you need assistance, your caregiver is welcome also. More details later. There will be a Christmas Silent Auction starting on Nov. 27 and bids will be accepted up to Dec. 15. More details later. Kristen Bradley has been hired as co-ordinator for the Georgetown Seniors Centre. Welcome Kristen, I am sure you will enjoy working with the seniors at the Georgetown Seniors and the Acton Centre members look forward to meeting you. Wendy has been working at both centres since Adrianna became ill last summer, and decided to retire. Wendy has enjoyed this opportunity to work at both centres and getting to know the Georgetown members even better. I see there are still a lot of newsletters waiting to be picked up. If you don't pick yours up in the next few weeks the labels will be remove and you will be able to pick one up at the front desk. There are a couple of mistakes in it. One being Lennora McKinnon's name was removed from the social committee by mistake, and I apologize for that and the tai chi starts at 10 a.m. (usual) not 9 a.m. I understand some people put the calendar on the fridge and that seems like a good idea, not only can you keep track of what day it is, but also you will always know what event is being held at the centre. Keep in mind that we often add something after the newsletter has gone to press, which is why you are reading this column, isn't it? Gail Oliphant held one of her cookery classes last week and I know we all learned something from it. She suggested ways to take the hassle out of Christmas dinner by getting things prepared ahead, and ways to keep things cool or warm as we all run out of the fridge space at Christmas. She had prepared a summer salad which was delicious that had both pineapple and papaya in it. The hot soup she prepared was also made with papaya and coconut milk. We were told to think Hawaii, and I think the subtle flavours of the food certainly helped you think that way. The next class will be in January and will focus on the taste of Tuscany. Hopefully everyone filled out and handed in the survey on transportation requirements for seniors trying to attend the Acton Seniors Centre. Solutions can't be found until we know what the problems are. Victor is a very busy person at the centre. Not only is he a board member and chairperson of the social committee, plus an avid hiker, he had put his creative skills to the test and created a float for the Santa Claus parade. From what I heard, it was wonderful. Hopefully everyone standing on the sidelines watching the parade gave them a cheer as they passed by. Peggy Neilson is getting very excited, as every week it seems there is another new carpet bowler. Last week Shirley Purkis joined them and they would like to welcome her. Shirley Kruk's Brown team beat Dorothy's Black team, 16-5. This week, Betty Blain's Black team beat Marg Haring's Brown team, 16-12. They were tied 12-12 until the last end and it was very exciting. There is room still for more players if you would like to join them on a Monday afternoon. One very important date to remind you about-- the flu shot clinic for seniors and high priority people will be held in the Acton Community Centre on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. I understand there are now more clinics, so things should run a lot smoother this year without the line-ups. The Christmas Turkey Dinner is planned for Friday, Dec. 8 at noon and tickets are on sale now. The lucky winner of the $434 in the Friday weekly 50/50 was Margaret MacLellan. Congratulations Margaret, that will help towards next year's golf membership. There were four mooners at the bid euchre on Thursday afternoon: Ruth Burke, Joan Bateman, Mae Milton and Muriel Dzierla. If you enjoy square dancing, John Wrigglesworth, the caller of the group has offered to start a square dancing class at our centre. If you are interested put your name down on the signout sheet.
