Wildcats football club to hold registration this weekend Continued from pg. 17 The Wildcats staged a number of tripleheader home games as well this past summer and the executive was intrigued by the amount of outside interest that was drawn. The Wildcats will hold a pre-Christmas registration this weekend for the first time in order to gauge the interest for its various age groups, which range from 10-16. Previously, players on Halton Hills Atom teams had to travel to Brampton or Orangeville for their games and organizers are hopeful that with Georgetown's Christ the King High School now as its full-time home base, increased registration will result. A sixteam Atom house league hasn't been ruled out, depending on registration numbers, which rose to 175 overall last year. The organization had to make the difficult decision of discontinuing the tyke house league team (9-10 yrs.) for 2007 to concentrate more on developing the Atom division. Dom Vetro, who played in the Canadian Football League with Montreal and Hamilton, is the co-director of the Wildcats house league, along with Mike Parkhill, a star player at the university level. Vetro formerly coached rep soccer but crossed over to football for the summer months after seeing the enthusiasm of his three boys when they took to the gridiron and the calibre of coaches now in the organization. "I played pro ball and previously I felt I wouldn't let my children take up football until they went to high school because the hitting aspect has to be taught properly. It's just so critical (safety-wise)," he said. "I just didn't feel that the minor football programs-- not just the Wildcats-- had the proper coaching at the house league levels. But the experience and backgrounds of some of the people here now is amazing." The Wildcats also established the position of coaching director, and Mike DeAngelis, a longtime coach and high school principal, has taken on the role. Another of the organization's goals is not to have to cut anyone, but it had to be done last year in the peewee division when 70 players showed up for tryouts and there were only 40 sets of equipment available. Vetro would like to garner some corporate sponsorship to offset the costs of purchasing new gear, including helmets that are worth over $300 apiece. Registration will take place Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Georgetown Market Place. Players are asked to produce a copy of their birth certificate. An early-bird registration rate which has been reduced by $50 is in effect, $270 for house league and $310 for rep teams.
